Hi, I'm rather new but also an experienced with scanning down ships. I ninja salvage quite often, but recently I'm having a terribly hard time scanning down ships. I'm getting some extremely frustrating results, and I've gone over an hour now without getting a ship past 50%... I do this quite often I'm used to finding around 6 ships to 100% within an hour.

What is happening is that the scan results I'm getting are not even kind of close to where the ship actually is. I'll get a 2 AU sized red sphere when scanning with the range 8 AU, I'll center it (still using 8 AU) next scan it will be gone... I'll move my probes back to where i scanned last time and it will show back up... way the hell away from where it actually is.

I'm suspecting this is some sort of a glitch with my character, I forgot to buy a medical clone and I lost astrometrics 4 which I re-trained, but it seems that ever since then that I've been having this problem. So If someone has some advice for me, or if some gm can look into this I'd really appreciate it.

Using as many probes as you can?
The limit has been increased from 4 to 8 as of Incarna, and what took 4 probes previously will now take 6.

Also remember to arrange probes north, south, east, west, above and below the site.
Putting all probes on top of each other is useless.
Also remember to use the alt key while dragging probes. Everything gets so much faster.

@Perspi.

I'm not trying to be funny about this, but have you considered another possibility for your scanning issue ?

I think some players have wizened-up to being scanned down when doing missions. You may or may not be watching their ships, to where they jump to and then proceed to probe in that area. I don't know. What I do know is that I will easily make 3 or more random jumps around deadspace before actually arriving at my destination. I will normally spend a minute or two at each location before warping-off again. Would this not mess your scanning around ?

Just saying. Could very well be an actual problem with your character, I am not sure.

Cheers.

Did you remember to buy new scanning rigs as well after death? Also know about holding shift or alt while moving probes?
One thing I discovered that helped me is probes being closer together usualy helps more, I have a natural ccomfort space, and probeing has none, putting probes closer seems to help the most. All I have.

I think he meant by players wiseing up is the they look for probes on dscan, not doing strange hokey practices the back alley doctor recommended.

For the first guys question, Yes I use all of the 7 probes I'm allowed to use. I try different configurations sometimes out of boredom, but generally I'll either have one in the center, and all 6 others overlapping the center in a larger radius around it. Or I'll make a box with 1 in the middle, and one on top/bottom.

The problem is not that people are warping out when they see a probe on their Dscanner, because they are still there when I either make my scan radius larger, or when I move my probes back after getting a no-result scan. It's that when I center results they are no where near it, but I can tell the ship hasn't moved because If I move the probes back I'll get a similar result.

Edit* yes I have two small gravity capacitor rigs as well. I know how to scan and I have been doing it consistently up until the last few days and in these last few days the results are consistently strange and off.

I figured if it was a glitch maybe training a little astrometric pinpointing/range finding would fix the problem. Sure enough after I added these skills to my queue for about 10 seconds each, I scanned two people down in a short time.. I'm not sure if it was a bug, psychological, voodoo or coincidence but everything seems back to normal now. So If anyone has a similar problem where it seems like their skills aren't doing what they should... Try this.

I figure that seeing as i lost the pre-requisite skill for Astrometric Pinpointing/Range finding the game just assumed I didn't have them until I trained them for a short bit... Weather that's the case or not, I'll never know. But I'm back in business, stealing your left-over treasures in T-30 mins.

Train into a covops frig. The bonus from a lvl 5 covops ship makes a pretty serious difference.

I used to have a clever sig but I lost it.

This. The difference is insane. I would go so far as to tell new players to not even bother with scanning until they have trained up a covops scanning frigate. It is like 100 times less frustrating.

this isnt true.
you could always use 8 probes and you get the same results now with 4 probes as you did before.

probing takes practice.
if youre serious about doing it at all, train covops.
