WW2 till today... like the Kawashima Maru, a bulk freighter. Not all names come from warships.

Japanese ships are mostly named after cities or landmarks. Chinese after animals or famous people.

Orca is called nebuchadnezzar.

It used to be "Metal (Noun)" (Ex: Metal Bludgeoner, shield tanked torp SNI)

But now I am going to start picking metal elements, like Cobalt, or tungsten.

My Wolfs are named "Gaaah!", with one 'a' added every time I have to replace it.
Rifters I usually call "small angel wreck".
I also have a weak spot for Iain M. Banks' ship names, so my main is flying a Mega Navy Issue called Demeisen, which is the avatar name of the "Falling Outside The Normal Moral Constraints".
And my Proteus is the "SS Lego II".

Just some advice, it is a very bad idea to make it obvious who owns a ship on Dscan through its name.

Names like:
1. Release the Monkey
2. Cupcakes
3. No Daddy
4. Pineapple
5. Happy Noodle Ship
6. JTHD (eg Johnny the Homicidal.... destroyer)

In highsec I usually start out with 010010110001010011101011 or something like that. If I even suspect someone ship scanned me I change it about 10 times over though.

Low / Null i usually go with Space-Trotter, Dr. Livingstone, Hemingway or other explorer themed names.

The smallest character there is. People hate me when they ask me to link my fit.

edit: Minmatar ship types spelled backwards can make for "wtf" ship names. Some people take quite a while before the inevitable "I see what you did there" moment.
