Why are people on EVE so hostile and negative?

Wanna know how I got these scars?
My father, was a drinker...and a fiend.
And one night, he goes off craaaazier than usual.
Mommy gets the kitchen to defend herself.
He doesnt like that. Not...one...bit.
So, me watching, he takes the knife to her, laughing while he does it.
He turns to me, and he says, "Why so serious?".
Comes at me with the knife, "Why so serious?!".
Sticks the blade in my mouth, "Let's put a smile on that face."
Aaaand, why so serious?

I have many times assumed someone was a 12 year old boy only to find out they were 30.

and you make it sound so disappointing .......

It's not Eve insomuch as it's online behavior, though there is something to be said about the collective. Like draws like, people with poor social skills attract the same..yaddah yaddah. But that doesn't mean it is the majority, nor is this the only explanation.

In my experience, at most, 15 percent of the people are nasty then maybe another 15-20 percent are sheeples / immature/ impressionable etc. (e.g. TS, corp/alliance chat etc.). The rest stay uninvolved, of which many seem generally ok people -- at least at a superficial level.

Read Yahoo! News comments for perspective. It doesn't even have to be a hot-button issue involving politics or religion. It could be an article about the homeless and ways to combat the problem. By the responses given, it could make one think that society is doomed. (Maybe it is).

In reality though, like Eve, it's the same small percent of the population that are haters (not just disgruntled) being obnoxious...but yet in an agenda-driven issue they would have you believe they are the majority. We also have many public personalities driving the hate -- it's a lucrative business. You find similarities on Eve to a lesser extent as elsewhere.

The silent majority, however, many of them with RLs and a generally healthy psyche, don't bother responding or find these people so removed from their reality they don't bother reading the slurs/hate speech etc. When it comes to games, they probably avoid forums.

Back to Eve -- it's also a numbers game. Most of the friendly corps I've been in or came to know are small in number.

I have nothing against alliances, but those who want to stand out seem even more driven to do so, otherwise they are just a number.

And it takes more effort to be known for being "nice" than "mean".

It also takes more effort to find the "nice guys," especially if they are the quiet sort.

Thick skin is an asset but so is patience and experience (trial and error) in this game or otherwise.

To the OP or anyone who feels similarly, there really are gems in the game and just generally fun people to hang around with. Also, it is a two-way street. Get referrals and talk to people who seem happy in-game, for a sense of direction on corps and stuff.

P.S. I'm not fond of WOTs either. Blink I'm possessed today.

So EVE, why so hostile and angry?

If you haven't managed to find a friendly crew in EVE for a year, it's time for you to question if you are doing something wrong (no pun intended).

Maybe if you explained the "right way" it would help?

Eve has a terrible community. Your post is part of the problem.

Some of us have been playing for a long time, and we have the same question.

When I first started to play Eve, July 18, 2009, I thought this would be a place where the human race could show what it has learned in the last 5000 years. Unfortunately, it has.

That would be because you are in a newbie corp, in high-sec.. likely carebearing it up. You have no "friends". That means a corp that will back you up. You are just a big target with GANK ME written on your forehead.

EVE is a competitive game and unlike games like WoW, the game doesn't end when you turn off your client. There is a long standing joke in large alliance leadership that they don't play EVE, they play Jabber Online!

So what did you expect? You can't trust anyone in your "corp" because it is just an newbie NPC corp and people who are in their own corps, quite rightly, see you as a threat and a target. (NBSI: not blue? SHOOT IT!).

My suggestion is to try playing the actual game of EVE. Get out of the newbie areas. Join faction warfare, join a 0.0 or WH corp. Hell.. even join a decent corp in Empire if you can find one. New Eden is a big and hostile place. It isn't full of fluffy bunnies and unicorns who just want to be nice to you. You have to take a risk first. Finding friends and trusting them is hard in this game, but without risk there is no reward.

Someone has a character in Amarr that offers therapy for ISK.

Does that answer your question ?

Join a corp that has similiar interests as you ingame, make some friends. If it doesn't work, try again, and again. It is pretty much like life, people are not going to run up to you and give you what you are looking for. You have to get in their face and tell them or they will never know.

Public forums, local chat, npc corp chat are not good examples of normal gameplay. We are actually much Much WORSE people than in there, hahahaha.

Really though, find some people that make sense to you and hang out with them. If you want to focus on the negativity, then that is all you will see (and it is everywhere in life).
