Worth Buying?

Hello dearest.

Just simply, Is this game worth buying now in 2012? I'm currently playing the trail, which I enjoy very much and I wouldn't mind setting my eyes out to my own corporation, earning a trillion ISK. The Eve dream basically. But, this would take some time, a year or more! And already the population of the server is decreasing? Maybe.. I wouldn't know since I haven't played it, so is it? So my main concern is, if I invest two years into a game and build an empire, will there be any players to see my achievements at the end of it? The big upside is that this is all ran on one server, but is Eve dying basically?

Cheers veterans.

This chart confirms that EVE is the only game apart from WoW with population increasing over the time: http://users.telenet.be/mmodata/Charts/Subs-2.png . I have no doubt that I'd be playing this game for next few years and I am a newbie. I am not entirely sure where you got that info about EVE dying; from what I remember it was a popular topic in other MMO games, but people rarely say it here, most probably because they are too busy playing the game (or fighting in forums).

The question about year 2012 and building your own empire is also quite confusing. Nothing is set in the stone, and large alliances rise and fall all the time. No one remembers who was the alpha dog in the pack in yr 2003, not even 2009 (cough cough). If you have the ability to build an empire then go for it. If you can't do it, then I guess you didnt want that empire anyway :)

The question was just really; What Is Eves population growth like and that graph shows it extremely well. I already wanted the game, and now I'll most definitely purchase it. Thank you. :)

This game has such a die hard niche fan base that it will most likely keep going for 10 more years. and i fully expect the amount of people to get a huge boost with Dust 514 coming to the PS3 soon.

Dust 514 is a FPS game set in the same server as eve where players can hire people to fight for planet outposts the game is compleatly free for the PS3 so its only logical to assume some people that play it will transfer over to eve.

And as far as the server numbers dropping...Its summer dude people are out and about its like this for every online game, you will be seeing 50k+ people again some time in October.

Just read up on some of the Dust 514. Wow, look forward to seeing that in the EVE universe!

This. Even if CCP tried to just pull the plug on the server machines, Eve players would march up to CCP HQ and start banging on the doors 'till the servers started back up. Eve won't die because the die-hard and dedicated players simply won't stand for it.

As a new player im still in the kiddy pool but look out at the deep end wishing i could swim. The only reason i can give not to play this game full time is because you lack the skills neccesary to comprehend its vast potential.

To be fair though, it should be noted that vast majority of "new" EVE subscriptions are alt accounts. You wont see many newbies around, not for long anyway.

If you are a long-term commitment type and can be online for long gaming sessions, go ahead. If you like instant fun, EVE is just not the place, not now not 5 years later (as in, everything takes awful lot of time here - from skilling up your character to actually using it, yay for 50j roams!).

8 months old newbie here. My corp is full of newbies (as in people new to EVE.

You don't have to be online for "long gaming sessions" to play EVE; play whenever you want; your subscription fee anyway.

And I agree with no instant fun, that's what other games are for; my preferred combination is Minecraft and any FPS.

(speaking of which , DUST! DUST! DUST!)

Don't think i agree mate, and there are no statistics in existance to back up what you're saying. I speak to plenty fo real new players every day, and since there is no way of tracking link between seperate accts i think you're spouting conjecture about the "vast majority" being alts.

Be warned that once you start playing you'll never be able to leave. You might get mad and unsub. Maybe even uninstall. But then your mind will always flirt with what could've been. Until one day CCP sends you email and says "Come back Sarik, come see all this cool new stuff. We'll even give you 5 days free, no credit card required." And if you take the bait, its another 6 months - 2 years, alternating between moments of pure bliss and emo rage. And you'll realize:

Nobody quits EVE, they just take breaks...

(Except the noobs that don't make it past the trial, but they don't count.)

Yes, EvE is a harsh mistress ... but we love her, and keep coming back for more.

Shocked Go into the deep end! DO IT NAO! Just watch out for the ill-tempered seabass (we couldn't get sharks with lasers attached to their foreheads... sorry)

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

Eve is dying? Since when...

Also you are asking people who pay for the game if it's worth paying for it. I miss the logic in that question, if it wasn't worth paying we wouldn't be here.

Games tend to die off for a couple of reasons:

1. The gameplay becomes stale.

2. The graphics become horribly dated

Both of those issues EvE has no problem dealing with. From a gameplay perspective, the sheer amount of aspects that can be mastered and the amount of time it takes to master helps preserve the gameplay. This is compounded by the somewhat regularity in which CCP updates or changes various mechanics.

From a graphics standpoint, they have a solid platform where they can make regular updates to models and textures and since the "world" environment is essentially space based wall paper, reaching a "realistic" appearance is something EvE has always nailed and will continue to nail down.

In any case, yes, the game is worth buying.
