Greetings Pilots;

The Mars Space Lab / Curiosity Rover will be makeing its Decent to Mars Surface Later tonight. As we all play "Internet Spaceships", I figured there may be some Interest in this. There will be a Free/Public LIVE STREAM from Mission Control at NASA / JPL.

"Two live feeds of video during key landing activities
from mission control rooms at JPL will be carried on
NASA TV and on http://www.ustream.tv between 8:30
and 11:00 p.m. PDT on Aug. 5 (11:30 p.m. Aug. 5 to
2:00 a.m. Aug. 6 EDT), and between 12:30 and
1:30 a.m. PDT on Aug. 6 (3:30 to 4:30 a.m. EDT).
The NASA TV Public Channel and http://www.ustream.
tv/nasajpl will carry a feed including commentary and
interviews. The NASA TV Media Channel and http://
www.ustream.tv/nasajpl2 will carry an uninterrupted,
clean feed."

Mars = dead planet, I don't understand the draw. The moon has far more importance towards the fulfillment of our needs (eg energy, platform to space etc.). I do like robotics though, so you bet I'll be monitoring this just like last time.

The draw is that we have only explored a very small part of mars , who kwows what lies on this planet ! Also , It has always been humankind's nature to expand its horizons , this contributes to it.

Looking forward to seeing this myself, fingers crossed it all goes well and we don't end up with a big brother for Beagle 2 - ISD Type40.

Moon has no atmosphere, makes mars way cooler. Also we've already gone to the moon (allegedly)Straight

Because we already know enough about the moon to not justify these kind of expedition missions, the future of the moon is in multi-trillion industrialisation projects which are far outside the reach of any government at the moment.

My hat's off to them. Great feat of engineering on the part of NASA. Such a massive object and such a precision landing. I can't wait to see what it discovers. Cool

eh no. Yes we went of course, but most of the moon remains unexplored and for the past 30 years untouched. I see no H3 mining units, I see no commercial transport platforms, I see no deep space exploration bases. Mars is unrealistic, and a radioactive death trap to boot.

It comes down to the possibility of Mars having harbored life in the past. Also certain theoretical similarities with earths development. There is still a general mindset that life exists only here, if hard evidence was found, perception of our place in cosmos would expand.

As I understand it, the Moon really is a giant ball of dirt, nothing to see there, whereas Mars is simply much more interesting: There has been water there once, which is an indispensable resource for permanent settlement.
That alone justifies the interest; if there ever will be a permanent "platform to space", it will be on Mars.

I don't understand, what good is proving or disproving some social question as to origins or whatnot while the Earth starves of energy? I take the position that the well being of the peoples of the Earth is far more significant to any idea proven or disproven regarding origins or what have you.

As for the moon just being a dirt clod or whatever (as another poster mentioned), sadly that is about the extent of the majority in their understanding of astronomy. The moon is a rich resource for energy, a living chemical repository. Abundant in H3, which is something that we are running out of here on Earth by it's limited resource. We need more H3, desperately!, not for some social experiment, but for the betterment of the human race.

But we are talking NASA, and the big money hole it makes for, good for politicians, good for TV ratings, while the world remains generally in the dark. http://news.discovery.com/space/this-moon-was-made-for-mining-helium-3.html

lol you think mars is a dead planet over the moon?! lol wow im amazed you even play a space game with that kind of knowledge. heres a crash course on things that need to be known:
the moon has no atmosphere (maybe a tiny tiny bit but virtually none). the moon is also A MOON. it is a piece of the earth that was blasted into space along with debris from a huge asteroid blast many gazillions of years ago and the debris orbitted the young earth and eventually created the moon. the moon is in fact a dead desolate planet with no more importance other than the fact a human has stepped foot on it and it was something other than earth. it was just a milestone.

mars on the other hand, is a whole planet. its not a moon. its a planet that has quite a bit of atmosphere to it. (at least allottt more than the moon, mars being a planet afterall...)
now, anyone with the slightest bit of knowledge of what mars looks like would agree that mars has more visually compelling evidence to want to go there and investigate. (ie the massive ice field on the tip of mars hinting at ice/water/life) along with other things that make the red planet a more desired exploration area than the boring useless moon.

i will agree however the moon would serve as a good base of operations for future space programs (just so we dont have to start everything from earth but get like a headstart on the moon)

anyway i too am watching this news with alot of excitement and hope we learn some awesome facts about the red planet. let the real life Planetary Interaction begin!
