NPC faction to player corporation standings are important to join factional warfare militias. Its also important in order for the corporation to anchor POS in 0.5 to 0.7 empire space.

Just to be sure - Does this mean it doesn't matter much in low sec? If I want to put up a tower in 0.3 for example.

Correct. You can anchor and operate a POS in lowsec regardless of your standings.
