I respect your opinion, but I still support Rocky Deadshot's proposal.

Read the whole thread. Your comment is an uninformed one.

I have a suggestion for this. Make each account able to vote up or down on a post... any post that receives a net -5 score is defaulted as hidden (click to unhide). This would allow the community to dictate the direction of the forums.
Try that out for a bit.... obviously less important threads could easily be taken over by trolls... but more important ones would presumably receive enough traffic and interaction to keep important comments alive.

This would simply give all the trolls the ability to block anything they deemed constructive and therefore a threat to the lulz. All Millla needs is 4 alts and she can single-handedly destroy useful dialogue once and for all.

I kind of agree actually, but let's face it, a game which ENCOURAGES people to do bad, evil and devious things will attract a higher amount of trolls than games which try to crack down on such behavior.

But in close to 4 years playing EVE I haven't seen an increase or decrease in trolling activity, just new ones replacing old ones, and an obscene amount of useless alts.

True, but the good guys can do the same to keep the informative stuff alive.

The problem here aren't genuine trolls.
As I said before, I'm OK with trolling as long as the troll actually helps the thread in a way (by answering the question, providing some information/insight). I mean, just skim read through this very thread - you'll see a massive amount of utterly useless, off-topic and straight out offensive comments.

This would easily allow forum moderators to go through and start taking out forum posts that have been taken over by trolls... as well as possibly allowing them to do some sort of active automatic hidden for any confirmed troll for like 5 days...

So if someone does post something that "may be of value" and a large alliance (for example) doesn't like the commentary they can send all their alts over to hijack the thread? (never happens here, just sayin').

You'd send the mods into overdrive and burn them all out. They'd lock just to reduce the workload. Which is why it's done....

Besides, a good troll is never spotted and a bad troll is easy to ignore.

Although... hmmm.... how many people actually block trolls? Can't see what they're saying about you if you do hey? Blink

See this is why you should have a "Dislike" system. You can limit trolls based off of their "rep". If someone who trolls gets a low enough rep you either increase the time between posting, or even limit them from posting all together.

Sadly though you went with the hippy version, where no one can get hurt because someone neg repped them.

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

I've worked on several forums in the past, some very large ones, some small. You need to get a balance of trolls as forums can become uninteresting an stagnant without the odd troll. They get people's attention and make them come back. The balance of trolls has tipped over in this forum though and there are far far too many. There are methods to control it, although few/none appear to be in place on this forum.
To be fair though, the game itself is full of trolls. Local is just troll haven. So it stands to reason that the forums will be full of them.

It's not the quantity of trolls it's the quality of trolls, and sadly here we have soem very poor quality trolls, there are some very good ones but they're swamped by the low quality ones, many of which still haven't learned that outright insult is not real trolling.

The forum is a place for players to communicate with other players about various topics, right?
And it seems that the number of people simply trolling without any useful information has increased. It's come to the point where they continue harassing people until they hijack the thread or derail it from the initial problem/question/information.
This kind of kills the whole purpose of the forum, might as well shut it down.

We all know EVE, and we know how complex the game is. There is tons of stuff to learn and many of which is backed by tutorials and/or guides - but the little things are still a mystery to many a player.
I'm sure all of you reading this have at one point had to deal with these socially ******** jerks with damaged egos.

Something should be done against this kind of behavior.

And no doubt, there will be some lifeless jackass to go ahead and troll this thread.

Quoted myself to steer the thread back on track.
Also, this thread got trolled just as much as I thought it would be. And it's not even witty trolling, it's just uninteresting, lame, already seen wannabe-insults.

TROLLS,
Y U NO CREATIVE?

PS
Trolling is OK as long as it helps the thread (and not just this thread, I mean all threads).
But more often then not, trolling = spamming.
It's like having to scroll through pages of junk mail to get to the proper mail.

Take me out to the black
Tell them I ain't comin' back
Flame the thread, report with glee
You can't take the troll from me

There's no place I can be
