Why is probing impossible!?!?!?

People post on an innternet forum in frustration, because, some thing seem like they should just work. And when they do not you keep trying and get more annoyed, That "dot disapearing" thing is really frustrating, I had it happen to me once after I read through the suggested walk throughs and such. I did however stupidly unmark "unknown". So guess what happened once I got above a certain level -> boom it dispapeared, somehow my brain did not make the connection and I thought I was going insane, until a kind poster mentioned to "check your filters, moron".

Oh and to the original poster, look up deep space probes, I find them a very useful addition to the toolkit, require Atro 5 though.

I finally scanned something down to 100%, my very first mag site. Lol

Now you get to discover that mag sites suck.
Radar sites are better.

There are a lot of good guides out there on scanning, even the old ones. They do show a variety of different techniques though, most of which will work fine but some are better than others.

When I was first learning to scan, it took me forever to nail down even the easiest sites until I started using the 7 probe cross. Basically you warp to sun, launch 7 probes and scan at 32 AU to get all the sigs. Then switch to 16 au, and with the view from straight above, move a prove up, down, left, and right of the center probe so that the inner edges of the probes still cover the whole white box of the center probe. Then rotate to look at the probes horizontally, and move one up and one down in the same fashion as you moved the first four. You now have a 3d cross with one probe in the center. When you scan, resposition the probes right on top of the red dot, set the scan range down a notch, and here's the important part:

Hold ALT and drag one of the outer probes closer to the center, and it will move all the probes in unison, keeping the cross shape but bringing them closer to get them overlapping again. Scan, rinse, repeat. With some practice you get into a rythm and it takes about 2 mins to scan down each sig if you don't have any errors.

Also as others have said, check the filters, and make sure you get Astro IV and the rangefinding/pinpointing to III, fit scanning rigs (grav capacitor upgrades) on a frig with scanning bonus (preferably cov ops), and use sisters probes at the very least, sisters launcher too if you can afford it.

So I spent the last freaken hour trying to learn how to probe. Once I get a red dot or circle, I move my probes in closer and rescan, and the ******* thing disappears, moves or clones itself so I have two dots to scan down. I can understand if it moves, but how the **** does it disappear when I move my probes closer. So pissed off right now.

It's called scan deviation. Basically, when you get a target scan, the object is somewhere in that general area, but not necessarily where you see the dot. By default, the deviation is 50% (for instance, with a 32 AU scan range, it can be 16 AU off from where it shows!). Better scanning skills, signal strength and equipment improve this by a lot.

Even in a magnate with standard probes and level 4 skills I rarely have problems.

I think the thing that most people get wrong is that

a) they move in too fast - I recommend only reducing the scan range by 1 notch each iteration

b) position the probes in a pyramid shape around your target.

The red dot is just a best guess - the actual location could be anywhere around there.

After 20% signal strength it is usually safe to drop 2 notches at once.

6 probes + skills at III minimum + covops + scanning rigs + sisters launcher + sisters probes = easy probing forever. Big smile

^^
i normally just use 4 probes :)
once in a blue moon though...i get one that requires a 5th

Signal strength is not the indicator in this case. You will have to look how far off the center of your probe formation the scan result is, and also if it has moved much from the previous/initial scan. If it is far off and/or has moved much, you will most likely end up with a double signal/circle/sphere or even lose the signal if you go down 2 notches. If the position is relatively steady, however, you will probably be okay going down 2 notches at once.

I guess that's too much 'work' tho for many people, as well as keeping in memory roughly where that next sig to scan down was ...Twisted

If it was too easy, everyone would do it and there would be massive over farming. ;-)

If you're consistently having trouble scanning things down, there are a few things to consider:

- Make sure your skills are at least at 4 if not 5 (Astrometric Pinpointing, Acquisition, and Rangefinding).
- Make sure you are in a ship with scanning bonuses (Heron, Magnate, Imicus, Probe).
- Use Sisters launcher/probes.

Technique is a lot of it, too. Some sigs are really hard to nail down.

If the target is smart, he will be checking directional scanner. Once he see probes @ 4AU, warp out.
