Besides two trials over the years, I've only been playing this game since 4/22 - I'm a ways off from being able to rake in ISK at a time/effort ratio where I'd be willing to fork it over for PLEX.

I have, however, referred a friend and got a month free. Paid him 250 million ISK for subbing.

Hopefully I can continue to find another person every month or two for the buddy program.

I just don't see that as true. It only takes one to probe down and hack a radar site. It only takes one to move stock from one station to another... and if I don't have the time I can contract it there. For most everything else, group participation works. I mean sure, there are a lot of solo tasks in any sandbox, but ultimately you side-step the purpose and draw of that sandbox being wrapped up in an mmo networking layer if all you do is do most everything yourself. You can't really solo everything with just 1 account; seems more true a statement.

if you're isk-rich enough why not have multiple accounts?

Seems like it to me. I remember back in 2010 and earlier most people I knew only had one account, now even the people I know who have been playing <6 months have two.

"Every choice you make in EVE has consequences."

I would never own more than one account in any video game. To me there is something fundamentally wrong with the whole concept.

When I started EVE I decided I wanted to be the best BS pilot that I could be and knew that I would never experience the game from another perspective, which makes my character feel specialized, and for me, it really works.

From an "RP-Lite" perspective, I'm a sellsword of sorts who doesn't understand or care what the scientists, industrialists, and traders are up to. I'm a simple man with a simple goal: blow up the stuff I get paid to blow up and get better at blowing stuff up.

I rely on other players when I need more than my own ship or skills. With that said, play how you want to play, but I would never have multiple accounts.

I should make a good DUST marine, I'm a total grunt =p

I only had one account for the longest time, but after starting another free trial one for a couple months and seeing what a difference it made in terms of what was possible with two, I can't see myself having less than two now. After a few months I even started a third with the power of 2 deal.

It's nice to be able to train 3 characters at the same time but I plan on going back to two of them eventually. The third account is nice but I find that there are diminishing returns after the second account unless you're building an afk mining empire or something.

this is the common mistake people make with multiple accounts.
yeah, there is no point training 3 toons to do the same thing. obviously.
but they point of multiple accounts is you can train very different, very specialized toons on each account.
it's the only real way to be able to anything you want in eve.

I currently run 6 accounts and they all do very different things.
my main is cross trained to do everything decently but, i have perfect minmatar, caldari and amarr alts, toons that can fly only orcas, toons that can only probe, fleet boosters ect.
all things i would never train on my main.

the idea is to train your alts so that you can use them all together in different roles, bringing as much effective SP to a given situation.

eg: for PVP i often have a fleet booster running, a covops scouting and a DPS or logi toon in the actual fight with secondary DPS toons on standby.

sure, if all you want to be is a grunt in some nullsec blob fest alliance and hit f1 once in a while, then yeah you can just have one toon.
if you want to be at least partially independent and be able to create gameplay content for yourself rather than waiting for your CEO or FC to tell you what to do, it's extremely hard with just one account.

While number of characters may be crucial to be able to cover all aspect of eve that you are interested in, you don't necessarily need them on separate accounts. Depends on you and what you need.

Personally I'm down from 5 accounts to 2 and soon to be only 1 but that one has all 3 slots filled with characters that can fill the gaps for my main. There was a time where I felt I must have a scout and/or link character, maybe logistics etc... but with time you just stop caring. Right now my main can literary do anything I want and with cloaky t3s, screw scouts. Over the 1 account my main functions just fine in low sec and two high sec traders with relevant standings for their locations and they can both build and invent anything in addition to main. Any hauling need, outsource it.

Having said all that, I don't dismiss the idea of going up in accounts if goals start changing. All depends on your personal needs.

Ed: I feel I left a couple of "PI Alts" off there. I think on the indy alt and one of the market alts?

I ran with two accounts for a time, dropped down to one, then reactivated the second. It's real nice having a transport pilot and I semi-regret selling mine.

A professional astro-bastard was not available so they sent me.

5 accounts? How many monitors do you have?

If I had that many... playing would start to seem like a job to me.

I've 4 accounts here - I like playing Skill queuing online

Random Main (When I thought 1 account was all that I needed.)Cool
Exploration Alt (started as a missioning alt but oh the humanityShocked at grinding missions)
Another power of 2 account that I bought on a whim, doing Basic core skills atm, not sure what to do with it.Question
Market Alt/Ex exploration alt(started as a alt to do research but realised jita wasn't so bad.)P

Everyone begins with 1 account and some get more, due to their personal playing style and preferences, I
Do not think that everyone will benefit from having more accounts . Some people have more active corpmates.Ugh
Yes, I started off with 1 account and realized that it was horribly inefficient to play with 1 account. Bought the 2nd.
Once I bought the second account, corp mates wanted a orca, decided to make 1 for an orca with power of 2.
Unfortunately , corp fail cascaded after i got my orca . Tried my hand at trading loved it (spreadsheets online).
Rationally, to upkeep 4 accounts via plex is an effort, but exploration and trading helped me get by.
My conjuncture is, CCP "encourages" people sub more accounts by increasing the efficiency when there is > 1 acc,
Other than doing large scale mining,(again my 0.02isk/cents)I feel that two accounts is the most efficient number.
My last account was bought on power of 2 but i guess will probably be doing manufacturing with it.

I have reduced my subscribed accounts from 5 to 2 over the last years, since I am a bitter vet and at the end of my EVE life cycle.
Will be down to 1 soon due to lack of interest in current game status

At one point I had

1x Main Subcap/cap Combat specialist
1x Support Leadership specialist
1x Industrial and Market specialist
1x PvE Empire specialist
1x cynos and stuff

Now I am down to

1x Main Combat specialist (running out of things to learn)
1x Supercap (will go inactive soon)

From my perspective, alot of other people have cut down on their active accounts. Might be a bitter vet thing, as eve transitions its demographic to new players and the old ones are not wanted anymore.

I have 16 accounts 10 of them are active, I don't think having many accounts but not as many players really affects eve much. While I have 10 accounts I'm hard pressed to Pvp with more than 3 at a time. While I have done 6 toons at a time in a fleet, it is not easy. Using programs like ISBoxer helps a little, but not a lot. I know a person who has 31 accounts, 25 of them active with the same problem even in capital fleets.

21 accounts only 16 are active right now. I go up and down as I wish to or as things open up or change in Eve. I started with one, thought Id never have more, thought it was stupid to PAY for more. This was way before PLEX mind you. Then 2, 3, 4 and up to 6 I think it was, then back down to 4 again. Up to 8 and 12 and its just risen steady since then. Some Ive let unsub for different reasons. I dont use them enough or what I wanted them for changed in the game and it just wasnt a priority.

I like building toons as well and I enjoy the entire personal army. I like doing everything in Eve. Instead of playing 8 different MMOs or games I play 8 different games inside of Eve. I cover most areas in Eve and having a lot of time to play helps too. Eve is a replacement for work and all its functions in my life but its something I enjoy as my own boss.

I can see the arguments how many toons breaks the game through the creation of some mythical unfair advantage but honestly I dont buy that. Therell always be something that creates an unfair advantage. Be it tech, be it T2 bpos, be it age, SP, knowledge, etc. Anyone CAN do it, some choose to, others choose not to. For me its that simple.

I have multiple monitors, 5 atm but going to get another and at least another computer hopefully for Christmas. It gets busy but Synergy helps control the chaos and I like that I can jump into things, keeping my mind busy and keeping me actually running and struggling to just keep up. I like driving myself that way and Eve has created a good outlet for that for many years so Im happy in that respect.

But really in the end its something to keep me busy.

Have you heard anything I've said?

You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?

That's right.

Had to end sometime.

I have had two accounts almost from the beginning, later expanded that to three and then four. The reason is that I wanted to have chars good at different things available before I'm old and gray.

I do not like to operate more than two clients at once though and anyway hardware requirements of EVE have increased so much during the last two years that running three or four clients is not feasible.

Now after three years all my four main chars (all of them only trained for pvp) have enough skillpoints that their abilties are increasingly overlapping. I have now spread them over three different corps operating in different areas of the game. This way, I can do different things and log in to operations or fights without having to travel or clone-jump. It's quite convenient.

As a result I don't really need more than two active accounts, so I have recently reduced my accounts to three by transferring a character, and will soon transfer another character and reduce to two accounts, but still have four well-skilled characters.

Having two accounts is a must for any serious player imo. There's always the need to fill roles that are boring and undemanding but still essential, like pod-scouting in nullsec or watching a wormhole. Giving those tasks to genuine newbies is not doing them a favour.

Also, if you want to do solo pvp occasionally, having two chars is absolutely essential. Every ship in EVE has some major weakness, but if you can field two ships you can make combinations that have a lot more than just twice the strength of the one ship.

Here's some stats I derived from this thread in the last 10 minutes looking at all the posts so far who stated their number of alts:

Modal alt average: 2
Median alt average: 2
Mean alt average: 3

A far cry from 1.2 :o
However the outliers (yes, I'm looking at you misters 16, 10 and 8) drag it up quite a bit.
With them disregarded the mean is still 2.3
