Why are people on EVE so hostile and negative?

High sec always seems to be full of horrible people when I go there. Try hanging out in low or null sec as the people there generally appear to be more intelligent and well mannered.

All work and no play.

Imagine people having a stressful day and coming to "play" this in order to relax.

I meet quite a lot of nice people in the game, tbh. Yes, there are some jerks, but most of the people I have met have been both helpful and friendly. Smile

I have a degree in internet sociology and let me tell you this is an interesting field. There are a number of factors that I've isolated that are unique to Eve that cause this phenomonon.

  • Compared to other MMO's the Eve playerbase is extremely monocultural. Overwhelmingly Eve players a cisgendered heteronormative caucausian males and the culture reflects that. Women add empathy to a society and diversity forces us to learn to interact with people who are different. This is not the case in Eve.

  • As a "hardcore" MMO we like to play up our HTFU attitude to be seen as cool space sociopaths. Empathy and charity are seen as weak and not in the spirit of the game.

  • Because of the reputation as a haven for awful people it attracts awful people. If you're an Eve Online player you likely fail to interact in normal society and instead seek out groups full of people who are equally as awful as you.

  • Because of the corelation between science fiction nerds and atrophied social skills most people who play Eve turn to this community because of their inability to empathise, understand and socailse with human beings. Eve allows you to replace those feelings of social ostracisation with satisfaction that you're making people angry, thus giving a false sense of adequacy that is otherwise lacking from your life.

One question. Did you get that degree online?

I know nothing of space or space ships, in fact I HATE sci-fi stuff...
I just play this because it seems less governed and more player based....its rarely even about the actual visual affects more than the knowledge based gameplay that I like.

Stop hating on teenagers.

This is extremely true. I've also met some very mature and laid back fifteen year olds in game. So unfortunate that the popular belief is individuals in such an age group are the major cause of hostility towards others in video games.

Most trolls aren't the "teenager" only, it's various age groups.

Preying on the weak in EVE (which can be seen as trolling) is second nature of most players initially I believe, whether its through verbal contact or through ship to ship interaction. I just think varying degrees of "patience" in preying on said weak is the factor in which many have a problem with. This factor has nothing to do with "age", its a personality trait that has either been developed, under-developed, or purposefully ignored.

In null sec, bigger alliances prey on smaller alliances. In low security, bigger pirates prey on smaller pirates and/or the average prey. In wormhole space, the wormhole native preys on the non-native or the lower wormhole class native. While lastly, the high security combat pilot preys on the missioner and/or mining pilot.

You could even say market pvp has the same concept as well. The smart trader preys on the less informed trade person.

We all have varying degrees of hostility. It's the name of the game in EVE I'd say.

Of course, personal opinion and personal insight is all this post is Smile.

But I'm not mean to people.

Then you're simply either weak, or unaware of your true potential.

Most people tend to start getting annoyed when the same stupid question is asked 50,000 times by people who can't be arsed to use Google or check the Wiki.

You can believe that if you want, since it serves your need to act out this way yourself. Sometimes a smile is actually a smile.

Do you always give the nice Nigerian prince your bank account details to assist him in reclaiming his rightful royal inheritance?

I wrote some true EVE stories! And no, they're not of the generic "my 0.0 alliance had lots of 0.0 fleets and took a lot of 0.0 space" sort. Check them out here:
