Or you could stop AFK mining in a hauling ship.

Or you could stop mining in systems where belt rats spawn.

Or you could get a real mining ship.

Or you could just warp away from the rats.

Or you could mine with friends that can defend you.

Any number of options exist to solve the issue. However, when it comes down to it, PEBKAC, and there's not much CCP can do about that.

Or, don't use a hauler to mine.

edit ... DAMMIT MX! Lol

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

Oh, young one. First thing to learn is to never mine in a Hauler. Use a Mining Frigate or a Destroyer in the begining, and skill as fast as possible a Miningbarge. I think it was 2-3 weeks for mining barges.

My advice is to not mine. But if you insist on doing it, don't use a hauler.

I know, I know...you're using the itty because it has a big cargo hold and you have to make fewer trips back. But if you used a mining frigate, you would get more ore per hour because if its bonuses, even though you have to make more trips.

If you're going to continue mining, train for mining barges. Get a retriever and keep mining. If you aren't bored out of your mind yet, train for exhumers. And seek professional help*

*I used to mine, and have come to the conclusion that it's bad for the brain. When I sold my hulks and went to pure exploration, I got a lot better at Eve. If you like mining that's up to you, but I'm going to continue thinking you're nuts.

I also think mining is boring, but I trained it for corp-operations and for some level 3 storyline missions, where you need to mine 6000 m³ Omber, its quit usefull.

Eh, it's mildly useful. You'll make more ISK in the long run if you just buy the Omber off the market in those stations though (the cost of the Omber is lower than the opportunity cost of running a couple more missions in the same amount of time).
