So many of us go to fanfest, and others watch awesome live feeds. We see the new Nebula and they said it would be out by Summer sometime. Ok, we understand you missed the mark. What happened? When are they projected? Remember that openness thing... talk to us.

They said winter-ish, and third party out of house development.

Third party could have delays as any subcontractor can.

Its assumed that they will take the full 3-d model of the galaxy and super impose it over the developer build of New Eden. Then they have the script go out and then take a snap shot of each system's background with the 3d model present and correlate it as the background image in each and every system, This overall saves on client resources and since static pictures in the background are not that bandwidth intensive it would be cheaper way to go on thoughput from server to client.

If somone from ccp would like to correct me I wouldnt mind at all though.

These would be rad to see in Winter Expansion, and they totally qualify as a "FiS" improvement. Especially so if they are implemented as planned, with backgrounds gradually shifting in color as you travel through a region, instead of being an arbitrary preset background as they are now.

You mean after all the content announced in CCP Zulu's blog for Winter 2011, you want more!?

The teams who work on various art assets have a pretty amazing blog in the works which is going to cover a lot of the stuff they are working on for winter. You should expect to see this blog in the next few weeks and, well, this one is going to be making a lot of people happy.

The Nebula we currently have is very old and it's really time to give that an update. (some ships on their own had multiple updates already!)

We hear you and I promise that an update on Art assets is in the works and is coming to you guys in the next couple of weeks. The Dev Blog schedule over the next few weeks will provide a lot of great info. i wish i could give you a firm date but, as always, it will be announced so you will not miss it.

My big concern is still having a separate graphics file for the nebulae for every single system in the game (as was hinted at in fanfest.) Please tell us we don't have to download 3 gigs worth of jpgs just to fly around.

Because CCP's focus on flash over substance has worked sooo well for them these past couple years. If new nebulae hurt client-side performance yet again and just as bad, cost more HD space than even walking-in-cupboard, I'll be pretty upset. It'd be a sign that Hilmar's words were just *words*.

you won't see any noticeable performance regression just by increasing texture resolution of a static background, even on low end gaming hardware.

HD space is cheap, really.

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

its still a .PNG file-ish.

From what I understood about it, the backdrops would still largely be determined by the constellation you're in, so they won't be that many — the main difference is that they'll be far higher resolution and quality, and actually game some kind of geographical sense.

It will no longer be red dust cloud next to blue dust cloud next to clear sky next to another red dust cloud next to that green-tinted cloud ring. Instead, if you see a cloud formation in the “south” and start going southward, you will see that cloud grow larger and might eventually wind up inside it.

…but again, that's just my understanding/impression from the presentation and previous discussions I've had on the topic with various devs.

That's more or less the way I understood it as well. But I haven't seen/heard a dev statement about how fine the granularity will be, or if they will even go the logical route and have a 3D skybox that will render uniquely for each system you go to (of course that would probably have nasty performance issues as well, knowing how things tend to go for CCP.)

Either way, there is a severe lack of information about whether we should be excited for this, or if we should start hating it right now. Seems safest just to hate it.

I'm hanging on to every word written about and for the fixing of Rails.
Cooler Nebula will be great of course, but not anywhere near my pile of "would like fixed".

Time to buy myself a decent trio of monitors, running Eve on two monitors is great, but three looks even better. Do those promised backgrounds some justice, rest of the game too.

WOW seriously... SInce the last patches were really worth downloading... they were pretty much crap! SO yea when you are questioned about when you say your going to implement something and months and months pass... What about the ones that are getting bent over by your winter joke of an expansion are you going to give back all those drone skills and titan skills that are no longer necassary since you made the ship totally useless once again... CCP come on seriously...
