Title says it all - a notification when being quoted somewhere on the forums might be a useful thing to have.

If its been suggested before or already implemented and I missed it, sorry for that. Search didn't turn anything up.

Just curious, how would the forum know you've been quoted when not everyone uses the quote button?

Simple solution might be to scan new posts for the [quote=xxx] pattern and send the notification to xxx. As far as I know using or not using the quote button doesn't change the message body, if the quote is done correctly.

I like this idea.

Jint Hikaru - Miner / Salvager / Explorer / SpaceBum In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Popular threads, like those for devblogs, are too active for traditional notification. Knowing if I was quoted often menas knowing I was replied to.

Beyond replies, knowing if I was quoted elsewhere, well, that would be interesting... if it ever happened.

No system is perfect. I'd settle for 90+% functionality. The quote notification should be tied to someone actually using the quote button.

Also, it would be lovely if a quote linked back to the post. Instead of "Quote=FloppieTheBanjoClown" it could be "Quote=1724164" which would link you to this post. The poster's name could then be drawn from the database, and it would allow for quoting posts between threads without having to link the thread separately. (edit: Quote=Name should still work, for instances where you need to quote something not in a forum post)

So now it says:

FloppieTheBanjoClown wrote:

Blah blah blah blah blah

What I'm proposing is:

Congratz, you just got quoted.

Anyway, I too would like to know when people quote me. Mainly because 99% of the time its bad trolls and I want to see how badly they picked apart my post. Big smile
