Sorry for the newbie question but I just wanted to get some insight on the profession before devoting too many skill points.

The major road block is just finding a place. I have searched so many high and low sec areas and have yet to find a single planet available. Are planets with open space rare?

/me scratches head

Are you sure you're doing it right?

what do you mean by "open space"? Only because I've not even run into an issue that way. Now that's not to say every planet is perfect, when you scan it, and has everything you want/need. But, it just sounds like you're not quite doing the right thing. I could be wrong.

Otherwise my advice would be to check out lesser traveled areas, essentially the same sort of advice for mining.

All planets are available as long as they have a customs office on them. You need to be in the system the planet is located in, Undocked and in space (with the command enter in your cargo hold) and a command center for that planet type (lava command center for lava planets, etc).

To find a planet you will also need the Remote Sensing skill, which lets you "survey" (view it in planetary mode).

To place the command center just right click a planet and click "view in planetary mode". You can do this from right clicking on a planet in your overview, from the info screen about the system, etc.

Actually, a couple of planets in highly populated systems (Jita, Amarr, starter systems...) are off limits for PI.

And beeing in planet view mode, you can right click on planet and let show CC from other players.
Scan for a abundant resource and move the scan slider to the left, to give better contrast.
This will give a idea how much competition you will get.
