Joining Fleet Comms and Overview Customizing

So after having come back after an extended hiatus there seem to be some new additions to Eve. That being the built in VOIP function. What would prevent someone from joining an active fleet comm? I know how to join them, but I always see "Comm not set" or what have you. Or maybe I don't know how to join them and have been doing it wrong. The way I understand it is to join fleet and either right click under the fleet tab and select "join audio" or click on the Fleet Audio button.

And is there a possible way someone would be so gracious enough as to direct me to a noob friendly Overview settings guide. The one's I seem to find via google aren't too friendly to someone wishing to use the more 'advanced' features.

EVE voice is rather limited in capability (channels, security, etc.). It is fine for small groups (my corp used Skype when there was only a few of us). Stuff like Ventrilo, Teamspeak, Mumble, etc. are used by larger entities.

Have you tried doing a forum search on "overview"? Blink

I did:

I eventually found a few decent guides. I had to start at the basics as I was jumping too far ahead.

The Corp I was in used Eve Voice and kept getting on my case about not joining Comms while I was in fleet but never assisted in my pleas to help diagnose why I couldn't join the audio channel. Turns out I was doing everything I needed to do, there was just some other issue which I have yet to figure out.

Thanks for the link though =)

You can import overview settings and there are packages out there which contain a whole bunch of different settings for different purposes in game, so you dont have to do all that tedious work yourself.

For example: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=52812

Might be others around, dont know really.

Oh I know how to import and save pre-made Overviews. My issue was not fully understanding the settings themselves. An issue I just recently stumbled into was using a Corp issued Overview which really screwed with me as I had close to zero understanding of what purpose it served. So instead of trying to tweak it I just rolled with it under the assumption that I'd just adjust to it, but I didnt understand that it required alot of manual manipulation based on immediate circumstance. Needless to say my lack of understanding the Overview in its entirety has led to some very interesting (and embarrassing) losses.

So I figure instead of importing someone elses creation, I would just create my own that way I can learn what I am doing as I do it as opposed to blindly walking in on something I know nothing about.

=) Thanks for the link though.

The EVE-Uni is indeed the place to start when getting used to the overview settings. Make sure that beyond just your overview you also lay out your UI correctly. You eventually may want to edit the ship labels configuration as well, and you can find a good guide on that by searching youtube for "EVE UNI Overview XML."

Example of an efficient UI layout.

Key points:
1. Local is separated out and sized to easily see as many people in the list as possible.
2. Dscan is always open.
3. Drone window is close to the HUD for quick drone management.
4. Targeted Items show directly above the HUD (Not shown) to reduce mouse movement back and forth between targets and mods. This also lets you see range to selected targets with out taking your eyes far off of your position in space.
5. Overview is in a place where it can easily be seen and clicked on with out moving your attention to far from other UI elements.
6. The Selected Item box is easy to reach, and large enough to get max sized icons.
7. Watchlist and Broadcast windows are close to each other, but not in the way when not needed.

Edit: last thing, none of the UI elements are touching the screen edge. This is to make the brackets for things that are not on screen more visible along the screen edge.
