Out of Pod Experience

Hey there,

As an eve player and forum lurker, I have heard a lot about the goons. I heard that they are terrible people. They scam, hack and show no mercy and so on. I personally have no experience with them so I am not taking that for granted and I thought that Burn Jita was a pretty nice event.

On the other hand, there are only two ways to become a goon from what I read: You either are a member of the something awful forum where the alliance comes from or you get a sponsorship. Since the alliance comes from the something awful forum, I guess it's the most common way to become a goon.

After lurking for some time on that forum, it looks that those forums are pretty nicely handled and that the people there look pretty nice and kind. Maybe not the kindest or anything, but it looks like a pretty great community.
Then, I noticed that you had to pay ~ $10 to become a member of the something awful community.
From what I understand, I believe that a forum with paying members should be much better than most other forums and that people should be more involved.

The only thing that surprised me a little on the purchase account page was that short paragraph saying there was not trust within the goons community on the forum.

Thus, I wonder how coming from a nicely ordered and paying forum, the eve online goons community can display the aforementioned values in game ?

Is it that the goons are a great community from within and that they are terrible for everyone else ?

Is it that most goons aren't members of the SA forums ?

Is it that the forum's members showing no trust for their fellows members, their eve online community shares the same values ?

I am mostly curious about this and hope that the responses will be nice and courteous.
