Using Voice Chat

So being new to EVE, I had a few basic questions about using the voice chat feature. First of all, I have a Macbook Pro with a built-on microphone, so is this going to be adequate to use the chat feature? Do you simply hold a key down or something to activate the chat?

Do you have to join particular once channels to communicate with other capsuleers? Is there some kind of location-based chat (say if you ran into somebody in the captain's quarters area, could I talk with them like I could IRL)?

How is the chat quality so far?

To be honest I think most people are using out-of-game comms such as Mumble and TeamSpeak. Also, I would recommend getting a headset since the voice quality will be much better.

As for the in-game voice thing, IIRC you can right-click most of your chat channels and activate EVE voice in there but I think channels like local (and possibly some others) don't have that feature.

There are two types of voice chat when it comes to Eve. First off, there's Eve Voice, the in-game voice chat program. You join it by simply right clicking the channel you're in and clicking Join Voice Chat.

The second, and far more common, type of voice chat is using a third-party program which is independent of Eve. The main ones that get used are Teamspeak 3, Mumble, and Ventrilo. To join these, you'll need to get the server info from whatever corp/alliance/group you're flying with and manually connect to their server. When people talk about voice chat, they're typically talking about using this kind of program, Eve Voice is rarely used.

And a built in mic technically works, but they are typically pretty crappy quality and pick up lots of background noise. If you're actually talking on voice chat much at all, you're far better off getting a headset-mounted mic with is much better at just picking up your voice.

Also, yes, you will be pretty much required to use a PTT (Push To Talk) hotkey. If you leave your mic on "always transmit constantly", everyone in the channel will hate you with a passion because constant transmitting (especially with a built in mic) gets painfully annoying almost instantly.

No idea on the in game Voice stuff as a lot of people mainly use 3rd party voice comms (Teamspeak3, Ventrillo, Mumble).

But just to clarify, you won't run into anybody in your Captain's Quarters, it's a solo prison. Nobody can enter your CQ.

I use eve voice a bit, quality has generally been good but sometimes it just wont work without a restart of client. Do the acho test in the ESC menu to test your microphone. Contact me with future questions, i'm not gonna act elite about it :)

It will always take at least one or two days for gm's to get back to you.

Did you try the help channel?

Also Im pretty sure if you join voice chat on a channel. You wont loose it or turn it off until either you leave said channel or turn it off your self. Is it possible your still on voice chat its just your friend isn't?

As long as you have that little voice bubble in the upper corner of your chat window your still logged into voice chat.

By the way when you ask for help in a forum and you immediately start accusing people you dont know, of being elitist. It does two things:

1. It makes you look infantile like your stamping your foot because you didn't get the answer you wanted right away.

2. It makes people not want to help you.

Eve is complicated as **** and the GM team is getting inundated with questions constantly, they cant always respond with in 2 hours of you asking your question.

Hope this helps.

The in-game VC isn't terrible, but it's not very good either.

I'd advise Ventrilo, Teamspeak, or if your guild is too cheap for a server google chat.

Eve tends to generate a good bit of heat due to excessive hardware demands. The heat triggers the fans and puts them into high gear in a MBP. From there, the surprisingly sensitive mic pics up all the fan noise as well as your talking into it as if you're speaking to everyone from within a wind-tunnel. Further, MBP mics are prone to being very sensitive/crystal clear - catching audio quite some distance above and beyond where your computer is. - ultimately it all gets problematic when trying to use them with eve & gaming.

Depending on your MBP you may want to look into a USB based headset or look for an imic by griffin or similar USB mundane headset converter. Unless things have changed with very new macs, - the mic input is generally unable to use common PC mics. Unless they're amplified before entering the Mac. On the other hand they're great for accepting an electric musical instrument or preamplified mono/stereo source and feeding it directly into the mic/line-in port.

Personally i'd suggest finding a good/decent USB converter for use with common PC headsets. With a USB converter you can use all types of headset of various qualities and features just like any pc user. Where as if you simply go with a headset that includes the USB jack your choices may be limited and the cost of headsets with USB jacks tend to be a bit more and annoying to replace if you're prone to stepping on/accidentally destroying them once every few months.

I was not talking about the forums but in game...

stamping my foot? not at all...I asked a polite Question in "help channel" and got flammed by about five people. I put it down to some rude people on and left it...

asked the same polite Question next morning and was flammed just a little less......

my friend also tryed and was met with a similar response.... elitist response on the "help channel" was what we were met with......so maybe that is why both of us came to that conclusion.

That is why i thought i would try here,as from reading other posts ppl seem to be more newbie friendly.

i dont expect them to respond in 2 hours....i put this in my question to find out what the lead time was as being a newbie i dont know what the norm is in anything in eve. 6 days now
