Noticed lately while running DED complexes (yeah im a glutton for punishment) that other players can target me and shoot me with... something. It looks like a weapon but it does no damage.

I amuse they do this in an effort to intimidate me in to leaving or they think im foolish enough to return fire with real weapons.

Anyone know what this pseudo weapon might be that they use? It has the look of a laser or hybrid but does no damage and does not even cause combat spam.

Is it a target painter? Looks like a red laser.

Ship scanner probably to see if you're worthwhile ganking or not

Could be the WiS ray. This experimental item has no real effect on a player, except to draw their attention away from what is really happening.

To buck the popular trend, I began to Rage Start instead of Rage Quit.

...and every time I get another piece of Carbon, I know exactly what CCP is getting this Christmas.

Close, more likely a cargo scanner to see if you've picked up anything worth killing you for.

Remote reppers or energy xfers, perhaps? These are pretty pronounced and would be easy to see.

it's most assuredly a cargo scanner.

any good explorer makes a route of systems to scan before undocking - so if they hit a good complex halfway through they'll probably continue on their route as opposed to dropping off the expensive loot. after all, scanning down a large volume of signatures is really the only way to make good money.

the best thing you can do is to add the person to contacts and label them. I make labels for corps and regions on my explorer so that I can have a reasonable idea of my competition when i log on.

proper paranoia provides profits.
