Tactical Overview Mode

Ok, I think experienced pilots as well as newbies can benefit from this.

Color code the distance column on the Overview to act as a heads up for weapon ranges.

(Imagine how many new pilots start shooting at targets so far outside their range, wasting ammo they often need later)

Default reference position: Top left weapon, frequently the F1 shortcut's position.
(This should be possible to change by right clicking on the button you want to make the reference weapon)

Have the distance column in the overview color coded to reflect targets at a distance within the falloff of a ship's weapon.

The closer this is to optimal distance, the brighter or other shading change, so if sorting by distance with several targets, the ones inside your weapon's effective range would have this color tag in the distance box.

For example, I would suggest that targets towards the outer extremes of weapon range should have a blue color, while those closer to optimal should shift through orange to yellow on the ones within 10% of optimal.

Considering not all pilots can do the math at a glance, a heads up that tells you when a target can be effectively shot at without wasting the ammo should help a lot of pilots.

The overview already GETS color coding, based on standings and other such things. I expect this would get quite confusing on a busy overview full of friendlies and people with low sec status (blues and yellows)

There is a lot going on with the EVE client interface, and the overview certainly does it's share.

That said, the column I use here, distance, has been pretty much untouched.

I believe this would be useful information a pilot would want available. Like anything else, I expect it would be possible to disable this if it was preferred that way.

(Even if you sorted by something besides distance, for example, being able to look at that list and know what was in range at a glance could be helpful)

The tactical overlay already does this in a way. Hover your mouse over a weapon and it will show a bubble around your ship with the optimal and falloff of your guns.

OK, so this is where non eve players think combat is "simple".

The Tactical overlay simply shows your theoretical Optimal and falloff values. It does NOT take into account tracking, sig radius, transversal etc.

So what the OP is suggesting is to add more information in an attempt to make things "easier" for new players. But all it really does is give misleading information to new players. Just because a target is in range does NOT mean that you can hit it or do any significant damage to it.

You are right, it does not guarantee the success of a weapon against a given target simply because it is in range. Mismatched weapons can sometimes take experience to recognize.
Nothing I can suggest would replace experience like that. I think you know this, considering the detail of the points you made.

Well put.

That being said, it gives newer pilots an understanding of which targets should not be attempted due to range limits.
And for known appropriate weapon systems, it lets them make wiser target selections closer to optimal range.

Every little bit helps, and a smarter pilot makes a better challenge for us all.

I kind of like the idea. Though, how about instead of color coding overview entries there were divider bards instead. Anything above first bar is in optimal, second bar for fall off?

I like the idea of more information being displayed but really I think the overview columns are a poor method of displaying information.

Ultimately I would prefer more information displayed graphically on the ships themselves.

An Icon for my ship when zoomed out with some sense of speed and direction.

Some form of indication of speed and direction indicator for other ships.

Perhaps a target reticule of the ships themselves when within targeting range that changes colour when in weapon range.

I know this may get messy in larger fleet fights so it would need to be selectable.

For small gang engagement with a few ships I really would rather be looking at the fight and getting information from there rather than a spread sheet list of ships and ranges.

I like this idea. as an entirely user-programmed filter (as part of the larger overview filter system), one could color code a target by two or more criteria depending on what type of weapon(s) the user desires. for instance, a missile boat could assign a color code to targets within a user-determined range, while guns could have separate codes for max falloff, optimum and minimum.
