Double Elimination - Every Match Counts

This year's tournament was awesome. Very well done.

The one problem with the current Alliance Tournament format is that, especially on the last Saturday, many matches count for nothing. There have been some discussions about changing the format so that every match counts for something.

The double-elimination format seems to have to most traction. It has its problems, especially on the final day, but it does guarantee that every match is an important match for the teams involved.

To help CCP in this regard, I've not only drawn up a large bracket sheet, I've also scheduled every match across the eight day tournament schedule.

I dunno teams that are pretty much out anyhow get some screen time and get to do lol setups if they wish which can be quiet amusing as a viewer.

With everything else going so well this year, this problem certainly stood out to us at the show too. I'm not able to make any promises, but I would be shocked if we didn't see major format changes next year to avoid this problem. If not double elim (which was the primary idea we discussed) there will be some other solution to make sure every match is important.

The main problem I see with double-elimination is the sheer number of potential matches a "loser" will have to run on the final day. If a team is in the loser bracket at the start of the final day and makes it to the championship match and wins ... they will have played seven matches in a single day. That is probably too much to ask of any team ... all those setups and fittings, and the time involved.

But then we can't have two brutixes honor duel before a crowd of t1 cruisers smashes together in a giant brawl of entertainment!

I honestly can't remember how it went off the top of my head and am too lazy to look it up... but why not take these "useless" matches have a bit of entertainment factor? First, use 'em between the actual competitive matches as an extra intermission. Second, throw some silly prize at them for being good sports and having one last match... say a plex or faction starter ship, or just some quafe.

Hell, make them get on comms and sing songs during the match for bonus points.

Group stages are not a problem, that's simply how a lot of tournaments work. There are occasionally pointless matches, but that doesn't stop them from being fun to fly or fun to watch.

I liked the set up for the alliance tournament this year. I thought it brought out the best teams to the finals. I found that some of the unimportant matches to be very entertaining. It also gives some pilots who would not get to fly in the tournament a chance to experience it.

Here is my two cents on how to improve next years inconsequential matches. Give Metals to teams that bring entertaining fights. One of the most exciting matches in this year group stage was Exodus. vs. Heretic Nation. It was fast griping match, and you got to see how e-war can help a team out.

If you had metals for both the qualifying round and group stage you might get less buying of matches. Some teams would want to fight for the medals. Might just add a interesting twist to the matches.
