I hope by genetically inferior that Lyskal Oskold isn't referring to people that suffer from mental illness, just because discussion of it is still marred by a stigma doesn't mean that it is an inferiority, 25% of people suffer some form of mental illness in their life and the FHC forum thread on mental health is an indication it could be more than that .

I'm really just venting because so many people had the opportunity to potentially stop it and didn't.

They suspect it's World of Warcraft. All is well.

No, they said it was a game where player's compete against one another. Investigation will lead back here due to everyone screaming the Eve is a pure PvP game.

Narcissist scum bag cracks because asking for help is, oh gosh, so damn hard. I just wish someone put him down before he did it. Taking out your problems on others is pathetic. I would have retained empathy if he didn't commit an atrocity because his crises management skills were inferior to that of a toddler. Also his parents said when they heard about it they thought it was him.

Umm, if you honestly believe your child is capable of doing that and actually might, it's your responsibility to step in. Useless parents, useless child.

The rest of the gaming community and the nature of MMOs cannot be blamed for the actions of the genetically inferior. The parents and child both had no idea what to do in such an obvious situation. I wonder how many months the guy was like that, all of his family and friends not giving a **** and him too stupid to.

tl;dr: Not our fault he couldn't handle his **** and his parents were as helpful as a barbed wire enema. Not even the common WoW player is that stupid.

I don't really think this has anything to do with genetic inferiority.

Considering all of his family, friends and he himself basically just left it even though they admitted he could do something like that brings me to the conclusion that something had to be in the water or something. It's like knowing for a fact someone is going to try and murder you in an hour and you don't call the cops, because it could sort it'self out.

All they said is that when told they suddenly feared it was him.

I think there is a difference between identifying or associating that behaviour with an individual after the act, and honestly believing they are capable of it prior to it happening.

Innocent on grounds on insanity, will be placed into mental hospital case closed, next case. I'd be a great judge. I just saved USA $40 million and 2 weeks of many peoples lives. If it was Texas I would have fried him though or I'd never get the chance to run for senator. :)

No, the investigation will not take place, because it's a knee-jerk “blame [common young-people-activity] for the ills of society” moral panic response.

Actually investigating anything like that would mean finding underlying problems that have nothing to do with what the pundits want the problem to be, so no-one will be stupid enough to do that.

Computer game addiction can be as destructive as any addiction so denying that as a cause is just wrong. It may very well be the primary cause of shootings or a combination of things only time will tell. You can't say that shooting people in the face 300x a day on a screen does not slightly de-sensitise you to it especially if you lose a grip on reality.

Eve or WOW?
The killer's classmate said James Holmes played a game 'like' World of Warcraft.
EVE falls into that category, and the same arguments about addictive software products applies.
Separating the two would be like condemning Marlboro on one hand, while saying that Lucky Strikes are OK.

While I agree, most UK periodicals are laughably bad (The Guardian, The News of the World, etc...), the article in question was linked by the Drudge Report - one of the best news aggregators on the net. Highly trusted by independent thinkers ever since the network news channels tried to cover up the Monica Lewinski scandal.

This particular article was interesting because the Daily Mail actually interviewed his classmates (who have, interestingly, been sequestered by their university).

That classmate make it quite clear that he believed that James Holmes' mental deterioration was directly caused by MMORPG addiction.

And for every James Holmes that goes on a rampage, there are countless others with addictive personalities that end up damaging themselves and their families.

CCP needs to take steps to show that they take these issues seriously.
Sadly, this likely isn't enough. Long experience has shown that industry 'self regulation' never works, due to the profit motive.

I would suggest that any American of voting age visit this website:
http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/

Then write your congressmen. Bring these issues to their attention...
Let them know that addictive products such as MMORPGs need a strong measure of government oversight to help prevent tragedy before it happens.....

Of course they do, they make EvE. They make it so you don't want to play, just look at the goons they support. They just want you to subscribe and earn skills. *scoff* fly spaceships *scoff* Why would you do that, you get blown up.

Keep the US Government out of my gaming tyvm, they're already pushing ridiculous laws into areas & countries that they have no jurisdiction over, the US Government can't see further than where the next "donation" or vote is coming from (actually true of most govt's IMHO not just the US)

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Umm...if the dude wasn't addicting to WoW or whatever, he'd be addicted to something else. Unhealthy people developing unhealthy obsessions shouldn't be controlled through legislation. Things like cigarettes are a different story, as it's a chemical addiction. Being addicted to cig's isn't a problem with YOU, it's a problem with cigs. Being addicted to WoW or Eve is a YOU problem. There is no solution that could be created from legislation that isn't likely to be worse than the problem, because if you manage to prevent addiction to an MMO, they'll find an addiction elsewhere. The help they need won't come from congress.

In other news, why the **** do we care about the classmates opinion of what drives someone insane? Are they qualified to make such an assessment, or are they blaming the most visible thing they can see?

Desensitization was a buzz word pushed around, what, nearly a decade ago? Since then peer reviewed (read: real) studies have failed to show any causative link, or any desensitizing effects to be associated with gaming. Seriously, the army even wanted to use them for that purpose and decided not to because it was simply a load of crap.

All they found was that new soldiers trained with VR games were still just as likely to intentionally miss kill shots in real fire situations. Although IIRC since then they have tried using that VR software for treatment of post traumatic stress for soldiers, as well as actual training.

I love how people keep blaming video games for seemingly random acts of violence by deeply disturbed people. His girlfriend dumped him , he was being evicted, he was skipping and failing his classes then one random comment by someone who has no basis to decide whether or not someone is addicted to something - ( if the kid calling him a gaming addict has degree in the medical field that pertains to psychological disorders feel free to correct me) - mentions the kid is a hard core gamer and its instantly the video games fault, not all the real life **** that would depress just about any NORMAL person, no it has to be the video game. What the **** ever happened to common sense and logic?

Yes I can, largely because the whole desensitisation thing is just more media guesswork with little to no basis other than the same moral panic we've seen for, oh, the last two centuries…

Denying game addiction as a cause is about as right as denying caffeine overdose as a cause — completely meaningless because there is nothing to tie his actions to games just like there is nothing to tie his actions to caffeine.

Never let facts get in the way of a good story.

Did you know that some psychiatric group put out guidelines on respibly reporting on mass murders to avoid copycats?

They suggest the following:
Don’t start the story with sirens blaring
Don’t have photographs of the killer
Don’t make this 24/7 coverage
Do everything you can NOT to make the body count the lead story
[and] not to make the hero some kind of anti-hero
DO localize this story to the affected community and make it as boring as possible in every other market."

Oh well...
