I can understand the "Rate the Avatar" one. It has been constructive usually and helps some make changes to their character.

The others though... rather useless.

When it comes down to it, 90% of the stuff in GD is going to be "worthless"

But some people happen to really enjoy making new, better, or interesting avatars. Once you have an avatar made, it's fun to express yourself through the little "persona" you've created. Just because it's something that you folks don't enjoy doesn't mean that it has no value.

It's a feature of the game which some people take to more than others. I'm kinda surprised that so many people who are proponents of this "sandbox" game are so strongly opposed to people enjoying this extra part of the game they way they like.

And yes. Whether we like it or not, avatars are a part of the game. I've only been playing a couple weeks, and the avatar creator was one of the features that wow'd me from the start, along with the cool gameplay. So I'm gonna play with it, as I see fit Big smile

Have you even flown a spaceship yet?
I swear you must spend all your game time in the character editor.
I've seen your portrait change at least 4 times this weekend alone. Lol

Yep. Even managed to make a couple hundred mil my first couple weeks :-) Been runnin L3 security missions in my awesome Vexor! lol I don't know how others do, but I consider that pretty successful. I just mess with the forums/character customizer when I'm between missions, bored, half afk'in it. Ya. No life, but I'm still enjoying myself.

This.

I think you get it better then some of the vets complaining about avatar threads and spaceship barbies. This post will probably generate a lot of replies on how you do not get EVE etc, that you are playing the game all wrong, since you are not playing this sandbox game like they perceive, but they are wrong.

Doesn't matter how you play the game, but forum conduct is still to follow the rules. These threads got a free pass in their early days when the avatar tech was new and spangly, and people were learning to use it. They had novelty then because it was new to *everyone* and there was some humour to be squeezed from analysing others avatars or your own.

However, that was a year and a half ago- and these threads are still recurring. They promote the one thing mods used to crack down hard on, and it was threads full of one-line responses or even just "9/10, /signed, etc" responses. This is leading to cases where people new to the forums see these threads and are creating their own variants, and seldom are these getting locked [only just recently has it started happening, in fact] and more often are they getting pushed into an entirely different sub-forum where they are *entirely* against the subforums rules.

I don't care that people enjoy these threads. Genuinely, I don't. I enjoyed the old "Laugh you lose" threads and CCP correctly nerfed those when it got to people just posting embedded imaged on the old forums, as directly linking images was against the rules there. These threads exist solely to be bloated with spam to feign content and purpose. It's getting stupid and needs to be corrected, or it never will be and General Discussions much loathed level of quality will just sink even further. Bad quality does not justify a lack of attempts to keep the bar high. Straight

I guess it just baffles me as to why these threads are getting a free pass.

Good post.

Forum rules have a purpose.
I'm guilty of breaking them from time to time, but I don't go nuts about it when the threads get locked.
It does bother me when the rules are selectively enforced.

The first couple pages of General Discussion can actually be useful for learning about current issues within the game.

Turning it into a playground for a handful of attention-starved individuals makes it LESS useful.
Other threads are rapidly pushed down the list in favor of page 234 of 'Like and get Likes' or page 135 of 'What is the avatar above you thinking?'

If the ISDs want to keep these threads around- in spite of the rule violations and general terrible posting....

find another place for them!
OOPE, or make a new forum division for 'avatar' threads.

Nothing wrong with that - they get to keep their threads, the rest of us don't need to see them on the top page of GD anymore. Thats a Win-Win.

Oh wait - no, never mind....
Pretty sure they will complain loudly.
Because, moving them into a new location denies them the audience and attention they seek.

I normally avoid being so direct, but you're frankly being a pathetic whiner.

Let's see...

On the first two pages of general discussion there are 60 threads.
4 of those are rate/avatar above me threads.
1 is the like and get likes thread.

This leaves 55 spots for more threads that you like.

How the hell are we interfering with your fun, again?!

Just because it's a part of the game that you don't enjoy or care for doesn't make it crazy for other people to post about it.

If you get tired of playing Eve Online, are we all supposed to just stop posting about it, because you don't like reading it?

Get over yourself dude. Is it so completely unbearable for you to see other people having light hearted fun in the "General Discussions" section of the forum?

First, judging from the responses, I'm not alone. They can't ALL be my forum alts. People find those threads annoying as hell.

Second, you haven't explained why it has to be in General Discussion. I've given reasons why it shouldn't be....

Wouldn't you be able to have just as much fun posting and reposting about 'rating/hating/sleeping with/thinking about' Avatars in another area? One that doesn't annoy as many people? If not, why not?
HINT: For the answer, see my previous post.....its just not as much fun without an (unwilling) audience...Roll

Come now, you're smarter than that.

Most of the recent variants have been created by people long familiar with the existing threads. Those new variants are not created in imitation or homage of those threads at all. They're created to extract tears from complainers like you or the OP.

FWIW, all of the threads in question were recently moved to OOPE. They were all moved back to GD within approximately a week, if my memory serves me correctly.

The original (wwysiywuttaayiyb) was moved to OOPE and several others were locked. There was a major uproar over ISD actions and everything was unlocked and wwysiywuttaayiyb was moved back to GD.
