Alternative probe formations?

1) Has anyone here experimented with a trigonal bipyramidal (3 probes forming a triangle in the horizontal plane, 1 probe above the center of the triangle, and 1 probe below the center of the triangle) formation for 5-probe scanning? This might help for newer pilots/scan-alts that don't have awesome Astrometrics skills (square planar formations are notoriously finicky with regards to vertical deviation of what you are trying to lock down).
2) What formation do you use with 6 probes? Octahedral, sans the center probe? A center-probe-equipped version of the aforementioned trigonal bipyramidal formation? Some other geometric concoction?

ive tried it... it works just a little more setup

Oh, Do go on... no seriously ive got nothing better to do then listen to all the petty arguments and feeble trolling attempts...

The sad thing is i'm not sure if i'm telling the truth.

ive tried the 5 probe setup youve said, and though it seems to be slightly more effective, the time spend positioning the probes is rarely worth it.

as for 6 probers, ive never tried. in theory it would be best to use the standard 7 probe setup without the center probe, or so i think.

however, if someone wants to go scanning route, he first needs astro 4 so he can train the support skills. those make a massive difference and are a no brainer for anyone even remotely interested in scanning. and with astro 4 you can use the standard 7 probe configuration that is (i think) most favored by everyone and their teddybear

5 in that set up is ok but I found it tricky to position the probes right and found 5 on a plane to be just as good when you consider how much quicker it is to deploy and adjust them.

Before I could deploy 7 I used I tried 6 in the standard 7 pattern without the centrepoint and though I couldn't quite put my finger on why, it was a total ballache at times and seemed less effective than even just having 5 on the same plane. I found having the upper and lower probe closer on the centrepoint than the 4 planer probes helped to a point but I wold say I found scanning easier with 5 and 7 is totally worth the training.

I use the three in the middle with one on the top or bottom as needed works fine for me. I learned it from the old "Battleclinic guide to wormholes." Never had a reason to launch more than 4 probes at a time yet.

I'm too lazy to launch probes or train astrometrics, so even my scanners use a 4 probe pyramid. i still think its the best.

best 5 probe setup ive seen is a 4 tetrahedron and 1 smaller probe in the middle.
no point at all using 6 probes that in aware of since a. it doesnt add any coverage and b. no one is going to have astro 3 for any longer than it takes to train astro 4 at which point you use 7 probes which is much better.

8 probes is best. 7 is fine.

8 probes in a cube. 8AU>2AU, 100%. Works for me.

With my skills I use the classic + shape and 5 probes. I know 7 would be optimal but I find that the top and bottom probes hamper my speed when it comes to adjusting probes. I am happy with the way I do it and am the fastest scanner in my corp.

The only time I will use seven probes is when I am combat scanning to guarantee I get the strongest signal as quickly as possible. But in that scenario I have normally launched my probes and flung them out fo the system so they cant be seen whilst I narrow down my targets location. And I only hit scan when I am pretty sure of getting that 100% hit.

???
adjusting speed not depends on number of probes if probe adjustment is done correctly.
Do you not use the Alt and Shift keys?

I do indeed use the Alt and Shift keys but I find that the top and bottom probes obscure my view somewhat when moving/resizing.

I have experimented with different probe settings and simply find that for the WAY I scan the + formation is the fastest for me.

I fire 8 probes. I now have arrows pointing in 6 directions. I drag out one probe in each direction, trying to drag them roughly the same distance. Penultimate probe I drag out a bit less far (this provides a bit of overlap at the centre).

I then use alt and shift to control them. Unless I mess up the formation (eg by not holding shift when I should do) I never need to adjust probes singly again and can scan dozens of sigs, just moving and resizing this formation.

It's diamond shape.
