1. the act or process of expanding.
2. the state or quality of being expanded.
3. the amount or degree of expanding.
4. an expanded, dilated, or enlarged portion or form of a thing: The present article is an expansion of one he wrote last year.

Don't get me wrong, the changes, fixes and patches and general hint of "redemption" coming out of CCP lately are pretty cool, but why are we still calling this an "expansion"? Back in my day the word "expansion" defined some sort of large package of additional content that expanded the game world in whatever way. But let's be honest, the list of things planned to be included in the winter "expansion" are at best some patches and hotfixes long overdue, and at worst delivering only a small fraction of what was promised in the last "expansion".

Now I'm not saying don't release these changes and fixes, on the contrary, please do. But part of the reason people are getting fed up is that CCP keeps using buzzwords like "expansion" and delivering mainly tweaks and code changes with no actual content. Granted, releasing the 3 remaining Captain's Quarters is a three-fold increase in new content over the Incarna "expansion" but it's still not enough to warrant calling it such. So come on, just stick to "Winter Update", it's much more accurate, compelling and non-infuriating.

A short time ago, in a galaxy very very close, many people cried out for the next expansion to be focused on fixes, balancing and spaceships...

Trust me, I almost know what I'm doing.

That's great and I agree, all of these changes are incredibly long overdue. But it's not an expansion, it's an update. Tomato tomato maybe, but it seems silly to keep calling these expansions when very, very few of them actually are.

Also, Zulus blog mentioned something about new Ewar drones and T2 mods - there: expansion.

I agree.. these are not expansions. These tend to be small adjustments of numbers on a spreadsheet mixed with some delayed content that should of been released the "expansion" before.

This just in, Blizzard announces new pair of boots for WoW, calls it "The Clogs Of Despair" Expansion which will hit stores early next year for the low price of $19.99.

NOPE not an expansion.

Disclaimer: I have never nor will ever played WoW. Though I did play Lineage 2 for a couple months.

-new nebulae
-new cyno/jump
-new gun firing effects
-time dilation
-3 other CQs
-probably more NeX stuff and the shaders on all ships being updated

the list on the devblog wasn't ALL of it, just the balances and fixes section.

I think it's more of a familiar term than anything else. Smaller updates such as patches usually contain smaller, less significant or time-consuming changes/additions, while expansions themselves require a much greater dedication or affects the overall gameplay much more, overall. So while it may not be an "Expansion" in that anything is being added (though they have mentioned there are things likely to be added), it's an "Expansion" in MMO terms in that it's not small enough to be considered a patch.

Does that make any sense?

Yes, expansion gives it a feeling of something special that adds on to the game. Not bug fixes that should already have been taken care of years ago instead of using EVE to Beta the WoD technology. (And thats not speculation, they wont admit it to us but Ive seen on their WoD page where they are soothing the WoD players that Incarna is a "prototype")

"Is it fair that CCP can get away with..." :: checks ownership on the box ::

None of these are ******* "expansions" these are tweaks and updates. Christ, is everyone ******** and forgot what expansions used to actually be? These wouldn't even be called DLCs. Episodes of Liberty City was an expansion, it added hours and hours of new gameplay, items, stories and characters. Black Ops was an expansion, it added new maps and weapons. Shivering Isles was an expansion, it added an entirely new gameworld. Rise of the Samurai is an expansion, it adds an entire new campaign. A couple of updated effects, bug fixes and rebalancing tweaks and some minor content to add to something started months ago is *not* an expansion.

Ok, there is a difference but

CCP is based in Iceland. Really if you think about it places like Haiti, Mexico, all of Africa, get a special pass on stuff like 'progress' 'accomplishment' 'expectation'. Why shouldn't Iceland? Because they're all white? What, are we all racists who will only give passes to colored people?

-nobody said we're getting nebulae this winter. Only word on it since fanfest was a dev post saying "not gonna be in Incarna."
-pretty sure a dev said turret effects aren't happening for winter.
-CQ's, wh0re st0re stuff, and graphics stuff = who the hell cares? I love it when devs focus on flash over substance and their games inevitably fail miserably.

so... 1 out of five.
And the other things that were promised mostly really are simply adjusting numbers in a spreadsheet. I wonder what the other 597 devs are doing.

Maxim 6. If violence wasn’t your last resort, you failed to resort to enough of it.
