Fast rate of shield loss

So I lost my first Raven (dumb mistake and un-related) but after fitting my new one I am having an interesting shield experience. For the most part my fit is the same as my previous Raven. When I begin a lvl 4 mission I take zero dmg, even when tanking a significant part of the npc ships. This goes on for a while with my mission hardeners running and it seems that when I start taking ships down (sometimes more than half of the ships remaining) I start taking rapid/massive shield damage and my booster can barely stem the tide and this continues until even only a few ships remain. Is there a mechanics thing that I am missing? I go from not having to use my booster (zero shield dmg for 10 minutes) to taking lots of dmg. My cap is full and everything seems to be running fine.

I assume you are aware that passive shield regeneration is not a linear function (same as capacitor regeneration) but a function of shield remaining.
The optimal lies around 33% shield remaining. Go below this (or above this) and your passive shield regeneration rate will degrade. The passive shield regeneration is in addition to the constant regeneration you get from the shield booster.
So your shield regeneration will vary by the amount of shield left.

Then there are other factors that determine incoming DPS like your range, your signature, your angular velocity compared to turret using targets.

Not just a case of getting into range of the NPC rats? They have a tendency to shoot anyway, even when they're initially out of (their weapon's) range.

It very well could have been a range issue. Most missions so far have been up close (<50k). Now that I think of it most of these ships were further than 60k out and although it looked like they were all firing and connecting...most weren't.

It could also be due to aggro of the mission rats.

Possible that at first you only have aggro on a small part of the mission complex, and with shooting the triggers you get full aggro and hence the sudden shield drop.

What's your Raven fit? Sounds like you might have hit a trigger or two.

As mentioned above, it could be an issue of NPCs getting at their effective ranges, or you have accidentally spawned some reinforcements. You might want to take a look at the EVE-Survival mission guides; most mission descriptions there mention the "trigger" NPCs that spawn reinforcement waves.

Likely the NPC are settling into orbit at optimal range, so you see the damage from them increase. Or you are hitting the triggers.

Warning: the following makes level 4 missions stupidly easy.

For what it is worth, a cruise missile Raven has huge range, and you can use that to your advantage and not take any damage.

Fit an afterburner and move to 105 km away from the beacon or next gate as soon as you warp-in, dragging the initial group with you, and orbit something. When you reach 105 km, you can turn off all your tanking modules, as NPC can't hit past about 90 km. The only damage you will take is on warp-in while you move to range. When about half the room is clear, start to approach the next gate, so that you arrive at it just as you pop the last NPC.

You can't outrun Angels, but pretty much everything else. Make sure to hit webbers and the nearest ships first (leave frigates for your drones). Moving also greatly reduces the damage you take.

I highly recommend getting a faction X-Large Shield Booster as a first priority, then a faction EM hardener, so you can drop the Co-processor for a fourth BCS, and upgrade the signal amplifier to tech 2. Note that Caldari Navy and Dread Guristas modules are identical, but not always priced the same.
