Has the experience been so traumatic enough for you that you had to bringing it up again a half year later? EVE Online surely is a "spaceship game," but in order to pull in new players, some form of synergistic "diversification" is needed.

You are right that the CQ was overly hyped with lack of playable contents, but there is an tremendous potential with this. Incarna was just a beginning of many grandiose things to come.

The state of a company is mainly determined by its ability to generate cash flow:

Future Incarna features and cashable NeX items (with momentarily more focus on WiS contents) => More new players and cash generated from Aurum sales => More stable cash induced company with highly compensated CCP Employees => More contents for spaceships in the future.

EVE Player base has held steady at around 350k for the past 2 years or so. Unless you guys can come up with another suggestions that can increase prospective player base, I suggest that you guys stop bitching and moaning.

Quoting Burke is nice, but in this globalized economy where "the only thing that is constant is change" bound by competition from numerous game developers and substitutes, it is imperative that CCP delves into other ventures that can provide sustainable profitability.

Simple, rather than wasting all their time on WiS junk that tends to generate more ire than excitement, they could spend their resources on, you know, the spaceships. Rebalance all the ships and modules, revamp the new player experience, fix any of the numerous holes in the game mechanics and client, make everything look and perform nicer. They could have done this months if not years ago, but instead they focused on WiS.

If EVE had better new player retention, we'd see subscribers increase. Improving the new player experience will do this, implementing more laggy, confusing, useless additions where a person walks around a room will not.

If EVE had new and rebalanced content and graphical and technical fixes, we'd see returning subscribers. We won't if it continues to spiral farther and farther out of line with features that have a huge performance and filesize overheads and are only tangentially related to the game itself.

UI design is a serious subject, the university I was in had many, many, MANY courses dedicated specifically to that. And while I only took the basic ones, it was incredibly informative and shattered a lot of misconceptions.

Sadly, I would say 99% of game developers have not taken such a course, or failed it miserably, based on the UI they come up with. Granted, these days about 80% of PC games are console ports anyway, and UI design is severely hampered by that, but even so. I often see developers do things that would have been an automatic fails in the courses I took.

And while it's true that you can't be everything for everybody, and make a UI that pleases everyone, you can at least try. When it comes to EVE's UI, it needs to take baby steps into the year 2000, and start offering features like letting us change the font, and font size, for starters. This is basic stuff, doesn't get much simpler than that. Unless of course the game is horribly coded and changing fonts breaks windows, but whose fault is that? If you take shortcuts and the easy way out, you will end up paying for it later with interest.

Anyway, I'm rambling and complaining, I'm sorry. But one thing I would love to see is more companies hiring UI designers who ARE UI designers, first and foremost. Not programmers, not artists, but UI designers. Because when you let a programmer do UI design, you get EVE.

Hmm, where you see change I see stagnation. Humans always tend to drift back to slavery under one or a few masters. Look at computers now - we went from the mainframe model, where you had a terminal or thin client that would send your data to the mainframe to be processed by the centralized CPU. You would get your results back once the job was run, and be billed for CPU time.

The computer revolution changed all that. You would have your own CPU, and run your own software, and get your own results. But what is happening now? The computer is turning into a terminal, and "the cloud" (be it servers at google, microsoft, amazon or whoever) will perform exactly the same function as the mainframe used to. The same old top down model that has existed since the dawn of human history.

I can see computer games easily following the same path into eventual mediocrity as new "features" are added to make games consistent with "industry standards", until at one point it becomes hard to tell them apart. The goal however will always be the same. You will be charged the maximum amount possible and given as little control as possible. Oh sure you can personalize your avatar or toon or whatever. Choose between official choice A, B, or C.
