Active Shield Hardeners

If I'm going for a buffer shield fit and I don't know what kind of damage I might have to tank at any given time, which is better if I have two open slots to work with:

2X Adaptive hardeners

or 1 EM and 1 Thermal to plug the holes?

In the cat-and-mouse game that is low sec, there is no shame in learning to be a better mouse.

Depends on the ship. If it has a bonus to shield resists (i.e. Navy Scorp), then just go Invuls. If there is no bonus, Go EM/Therm.

Just my 2 cents.

If you don't min me asking, what is it that you plan to do... and what ship?

The classic combo for T1 resists is 1x Adaptive, 1x EM if you're getting gang boosts, 2x adaptive otherwise.

I prefer to fix the gaping hole of em and fill the rest using invulns.

T1 Industrial.

Yes I'm under no illusion that a dedicated gank ship will 1 shot it if they really want to...I just wish to maximize EHP to reduce the number of ships that can.

Mammoth specifically. X3 Medium shield extenders, trying to find the best hardeners for the remaining two. Perhaps 3 hardeners might be better?

No gang boosts and cap use isn't an issue.

I've generally used two invuls and three MSE's on a five-mid-slot setup, but those are all T2 modules, so your mileage may vary.

When someone says "use EFT" as above, in a situation like this, basically what you need to do is piece together your fit in EFT, and swap out modules until you've got an acceptable EHP number. There's a way to paste damage profiles into EFT's config documents, so you can switch out the damage EFT will assume you're being hit with - for instance, if you wanted to see how well your tank would hold up to a Void-shooting blaster boat, as versus an arty boat firing Quake. Can't remember how to do it off the top of my head, though.

I think a single max-gank Tornado firing T2 1400's with the best faction ammo available will throw about 12,000 to13,000 alpha damage at you, and it's unlikely (but not impossible) that he'll get off a second shot. With the 2x Invul II and 3x MSE II tank, you might just be able to squeak out from that one shot - though you'd probably suffer armor and structure damage - but if you also give up a cargohold expander for a damage control, your shield should be able to tank the best shot they can throw at you. No guarantees, though; they might get a wrecking shot, or have friends.

DMG profiles need to be set by yourself so you need to edit and apply % related to the ammo type if you want to know how much tank you have VS "X" or "Y" dmg type incoming.

Adaptive Hardeners, for shield? Have I overlooked or misunderstood something?

They're not adaptive like the new Reactive Armor Hardeners, if that's what you're thinking. They renamed Invulns to "Adaptive Invulnerability Field" a short while back.

My "standard fit" is 1 EM 1 Therm 2 Invuln. Then the rest of my mods for whatever else I want the ship to do.
With armour 1 exp 1 kin 2 nano.

If brute force isn't working, you're just not using enough.
