It doesn't have to be better than a BC. Just its silly that a combat ship is used to harvest gas (in fact, only combat ships can be used for it... aside from 1 turret indies Lol).

Given that most gas clouds, especially outside of wormholes, are in dangerous space, and typicaly have defenders, i'd rather have a combat ship with some tank than some gas mining barge.

for what do you need the extra tank? surviving 1min istead of 10 secs?

A new ship for the sake of a new ship is a waste of developer time. If they made one, it would probably have gas mining bonuses, which would mean harvesters would make less money. Not exactly a great idea.

Battlecruisers already have good tank, and if you use a myrmidon you have good offense (or plenty of space for e-war drones to GTFO).

New ships are fun, but let CCP focus on all the other things that need to be fixed first.

Isn't there a T2 Retriever or something that harvests gas?

How about tanking damage while harvesting the gas? Some are defended by NPC's Some cause AOE damage while you are harvesting.

I'm thinking you are thinking of WH Ladars probably? There are more types of Ladar sites than those in WH's
