Hi all.

What is there to say? How may one go about encapsulating the vast magnitude of calamity and joy that awaits a new player? A polarization if ever there was one.

I aim to give a brief overview of my first few days as a capsuleer, navigating the vast expanse of space with little knowledge of a game whose mechanics i cannot even begin to comprehend. ( Anyone get the pun?)

1. Why was I attracted to this game?
It appealed to my ideal's... I was engorged by the beauty and freedom this game seemed to allow it's players... a freedom where one is truly in control of their characters destiny; where one could venture to the greatest depth's of New Eden.
Furthermore, it contained economic mechanics that I interpreted could prove invaluable to my future studies... as a character one may say I am aiming to eventually become heavily involved in the economic side of the game... one where the true wars that shape eve's universe seem to take place

2. How Do I feel about the community?
I have browsed the forum and am pleased to see the level of engagement and activity of many players.. Who seem to confound the widespread warnings generally attached to the impervious question we all made before joining.
The Devs seem to be very engaged in the game and seem to be very active in ensuring a fantastic community can thrive. In today's world?! To find devs and staff who seem to be able to empathize with their subscribers?!

FIRST 48 HOURS.... MADNESS

Immediately plunged into a world so far removed from our own... the mind is absolutely ravaged by the gross scope of it all. New game controls... new mechanics... new ideal's.... everything new to a mind untouched by the madness inherent within this game.
Did the tutorial's... the intro one and 5 agent one's. Now have a decent bit of isk... things are looking up for young Dapics.

3-5 DAYS.... .. ISK
Hey! I seem to be getting the hang of this! Buy low... sell high.... mine and sell.... mine and sell.... 10 miners bought for 2 mil isk each... resold for 20mil each..... nice.
Suddenly I am shocked to hear of this "Must Do Quest"... what quest I ask? Why the "Sisters of Eve" quest they say.... alas the journey begins.
Get as far as chapter 5... time to take a break from this nefarious never ending quest eh? Some more trading... Venture into Jita.... Almost suicide ganked.... whoa!! That was a close call... I hope I never have to lose a ship

5-6 DAYS.... IT HAPPENS
last mission of chapter 6.... two choices... what must one chose.... Ah I know.... the one that involves less work... Steal some DNA? Pftt... that sounds easy.
DNA retrieved... must kill drone... Cormorant is ready for action.......
Cormorant destroyed... a young man sits at his laptop amazed by what just happened.... following a brief moment of rage he begins to visit local channel... hoping to find others who have shared a similar fate... turns out many have.... meet's a fantastic experienced player.... shows me how combat really works (Angular Velocity... Auxiliary Shields.... Tracking rate....fighting style must match range of weapons... and so on)... Also receive a very generous donation from this player... am indebted to him for his help.... he says nay! You are now free to trawl the expanse of space once more!!

7-NOW.... HAVING FUN

Am introduced to the lighter side of this game.... meet other players with similar interests... go exploring... quite simply - Having Fun

By the way.. for those saying this game requires dedicated graphics cards or whatever.. or gtx 560's to play... It dosent.
I can run it perfectly on my laptop with no lag at medium-high settings. That is intel hd 3000 integrated graphics...

One Question : Is trading very difficult in this game? As in micro-trading?

On the international accepted Polo Scale of Trading Difficultinicity EVE-Online scares a 5.

Nope. Pretty simple really. I would advise starting with something a little less dynamic than day-trading at a major hub, though. Maybe buy cheap stuff in high demand at the trade hub, ship over a region where prices are higher using an industrial ship, and sell there. At the hubs themselves you're probably going to be outclassed by players with bigger seed funding and bots with faster links to the relevant data (the latter being a violation of TOS, but meh, whatever).

If you want to stick with mining, mining and then making ammo and selling it in a mission hub is sort of the traditional start to the industry side of the trade system.

Your story was well written, and your adventure not much different from many of us here in New Eden. Welcome!

As for your question, yes... micro trading is valid, simple, and enjoyable (if thats your style). However, as someone else mentioned, it is easy to get out-classed by someone with a bigger wallet to throw around.

Finding a few major mission hubs/0.0 launch points and supplying them is how a lot of traders get their start, and its not a bad way to make isk.

As for the industry side, it is an entirely different creature than trading, though some elements definitely cross. Many players start out with industry loosing (potential) money by building items of a lower value than their core materials. While this is of course fine to do, it can cause some frustrations in newer players who feel they are progressing slower than they should.

As an experienced industrial person, I recommend finding someone intimately familiar with the workings of industry to learn from... just like what you learned from the guy who gave you tips on your ship and its build, never be afraid to ask.... it can save you some very painful lessons.

Welcome to EVE. There are a few strange quirks in EVE trading but not being an expert I won't go into that.
If it's too good to be true it really IS too good to be true. Stick with this and you should be ok. Blink

Station trading is easy just make sure you get Day trading so you can adjust your buy and sell orders through out the day. Major trade hubs are Amarr Jita Rens Dodixie.

Jita + Amarr are more busy. This means more competition but quicker turn around on product bought and sold.

Your getting the hang of things. Now you just need to loose a couple ships shooting other people in the face and you'll be a real capsuleer.

Noir. and Noir Academy are recruiting apply at www.noirmercs.com I Noir Academy: 60 days old must be able to fly at least one tech II frigate. I Noir. Recruits: 4:1 k/d ratio and can fly tech II cruisers.

You will last in EVE I think, trading or market pvp as some will call it can make you lots of money in a shortish amount of time if you research and are patient.

I'm bloody useless at it and even I still managed to make 2bill odd in around a month and updating things a couple of times a day.

God Said "Come Forth and receive eternal life!" I came fifth and won a toaster!

Yeah I'm looking to stick around, sample the food of war laid out on a platter before us!

Is it true that there are a lot of market bots in this game? I came across a player who reported what I interpret to be very much bot-like activity

Also... A quick look at the market history for various commodities shows an increase in the rate of inflation, particularly in the past 3 months. Would it be safe to bank on future's trading?

Absolutely. As the world banks have shown us there is absolutely no danger whatsoever in such a copper bottomed investment strategy.

Given that there isn't actually any way to trade on derivative values for items... no, I wouldn't bank on it, heh.

Also, the core concept isn't really valid for a video game economy-- there's no hard limit on the generation of either currency or resources and the soft limits imposed by player behavior aren't really very... strong controls. Trying to treat it like a real economy gets weird fast since, y'know, no boundary conditions for the economics makes the equations more or less arbitrary.

Regarding the current bubble/inflation specifically: CCP just got done implementing several major revamps to how gear and isk are generated. Compared to a year ago:

-- Missions generate less gear, more isk in general (especially, drones no longer drop minerals and do drop bounties)
-- Mission loot no longer competes directly with manufactured loot (no T0 drops)
-- Trading and refining for newer players now requires slightly more dedicated skills/faction/infrastructure
-- CCP finally figured out how to identify mining bots with some reliability and nuked the lot of them (giant hit to overall production)
-- Certain frigates will soon have more turret slots (more guns lost in PvP)

If you add all that up, you're talking a lot of major forces inflating the isk cost of minerals and, thus, everything. Historically speaking, it'll level out and go back to short fluctuations within 4 or 5 months.

(Yeah, I know, Hulkageddon, blah blah. It doesn't really impact mineral production all that much, not compared to developers making major alterations to the entire universe.)

I am also new and do lots of trading. I believe someone mentioned that there is a significant bump when an expansion is released. I noticed items getting more expensive matching when Inferno came out and are now normalizing. The advise on getting the remote trade skills is true, although the difference between 5 jumps away and 10 jumps is small and waiting for level 5 seems silly for a new player since I believe you are always limited to the region for making/modifying orders. I find the number of open orders becomes more of an issue if you are working all four trade hubs.

These remote trade skills are awesome if you do mission running since you can trade while doing missions in the same region.

It is indeed quite frustrating being limited to one station at a time if you don't have the isk to pay for the skills necessary.Sad

I have made 8-10 million in isk in my first 10 days in trading simply by exploiting certain externalities which allow me to buy certain goods very and sell very high due to the laws of demand and supply inherent within this game to a certain extent.

I study economics and finance in RL and find the market mechanisms in this game quite fascinating... not to mention some of the ingenious scams that are out there... the margin trading scam for instance.

What i meant by banking on future commodities was to purchase stock now and float it in three months time with the expectation (and gamble some economists would argue) that the prices will have risen thereby netting me a nice amount of isk... Not to mention attempting to manipulate a certain market to succeed in this goal.
Is this a viable strategy?

Obviously I dont have the purchasing power and ease of liquidity to engage in such speculation but it does fascinate me.
Also one final question to probe your intellectual minds with:

Are there any corps which collectively engage heavily in trading? The RL equivilent of an investment bank or stockbrokers for instance. (I obviously know investment banks and stockbrokers do not exist in the game... with the exception of Chribba perhaps... yet then again how is that wondrous Veldgod a bank if he dosen't charge interest on his loans which as far as I am led to believe are very generous in their terms and conditions... indeed if there are any attached to his generosity? Smile)

Are you attempting to imply something? Do you question the integrity of my questioning? Do you really think I am a troll?

If your answer to either of these questions are correct:

Do proceed to explain your statement .

I have been browsing on these forums for the past year which may help to alleviate your worries
(I would interject a "sad" smiley but that is futile due to the nature of the smiley... it implies smiling which I am not currently doing.... take a look at my character portait for example... is he smiling? Nay he is stern in nature and complection yet perplexed in his demeanour.)

Don't worry about losing ships. You will lose ships. Get used to it.

You will lose small ships. You will lose big ships.

You will lose cheap ships. You will lose expensive ships.

Ships are built. Ships are traded. Ships are destroyed. Ships happen.

Ships are replaceable tools, and some tool will cause you to replace it.
