Dwarf Fortress, like EVE, is a wide open sandbox...has an arguably steeper learning curve than even EVE's and has just as much potential for cruelty/hilarity...but in a single player game.

Any EVE players play DF? Any unique stories of fun?

In the cat-and-mouse game that is low sec, there is no shame in learning to be a better mouse.

The Tantrum cascades, oh god the Tantrum cascades, nothing funnier than watching the death of someone's pet cat result in a city wide orgy of violence which leaves your halls scattered with the dead, although my best has got to be a bed ridden warrior (both legs broken) continuing to fight the creature which put him in that position FROM his bed.

DF is pretty awesome. Nothing like your first dig too deep... Had my little guys hiding out in the dining hall, when the demons rushed in, the first victims were the kids and pets, then the rest burned to ashes as well. Only survivor was one hunter topside, since the demons refused to go outside.

My first fort was dead within a season when a pack of baboons picked the starting wagon clean of booze and food. This was before I knew how to setup early defenses...or the importance of unpacking the wagon quickly. Needless to say, I got the notification that the fort was out of booze and I was *just* getting the crops in the ground...and the caravan wouldn't be showing up for awhile.

I see quite a few parallels between EVE and DF. Besides the legendarily steep learning cliff, you have EVE's Failscade, which seems to have notes of a Tantrum Spiral in DF...where one little thing goes wrong, and one high-level person gets pissed off and does something rash which causes the whole thing to unravel in a spectacular manner.

And no, this isn't a troll thread. I genuinely want a discussion about DF from fellow EVE players.

I also play DF from time to time. I usually try to avoid the Fun. Had once a giant who wanted to destroy my fortress. He was easily killed by my wardog army ^^.
And ofcourse I have the occasional fortress flooding.

Dwarf Fortress is awesome. Best singleplayergame out there.

Do you know what's really dumbing down eve? Graphics! If you really want a hardcoregame with a learning curve that even beats eve: Try bay12games.com/dwarves

One of my fortresses got infected with a highly contagious puking syndrome.

pics say it all, blue is vomit

I really want to try out the latest version with the minecarts, anyone try that yet ? I keep dreaming of drive by crossbow snipers...

DF is the best game ever. Period.

I'm not sure about drive-by crossbowings, but I did read a dev blog from Toady that he had a dwarf in a minecart, had it go off a ramp and fly over a stone pillar with a goblin over it. The Dwarf hopped out of the cart mid-flight and started smacking the goblin with a hammer as the cart flew into a pit behind him. "Working as intended"

The whole mermaid bone farming debacle was a hilarious example of the kind of black comedy the community comes up with.
