Good grief. What a game! Need some help please?

Being a rather impatient git, I do not do much reading before charging head on into things...this game being one of them Straight

I thought it would a simple space game, some trading, the odd shoot out etc, etc...my chin was on the floor as soon as the game started! Was about to pull the plug, but thought no, lets have a sniff around and see whats what!
Anyway, I completed the starter tutorials, I think I have anyway, as I am now embarking on an exploring career, and that is what I need help with please.

Are there any decent places to read up on exploring? A place that gives idiot guides? The skills required, best ships for the job, that sort of thing.

I must admit that the game looks awesome on my 560GTX card, the eye-candy is brilliant, and it seems an endless event with so much to do and see, that why I went down the explorer route. Besides, I have had my fill of killing people in COD, Battlefield, MoH, company of Heroes, so a nice change of scenery is what I needed, and maybe a nice peaceful solo career.

So, if some nice person could point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated Blink

Regards........

first off: If you aren't prepared to read a couple dozen guides, EVE MAY not be the game for you.

Red Vs. Blue if you want PVP
Scan Frigate (Imicus/Probe/Magnate/Heron [?]) to probe things down (a la exploration)
I=Frig. II=Cruiser. III=BC. IV=BS
Bigger is NOT better--Capitals tend to be boring and lost easily if fielded without proper support. a lot of people have fun flying only frigates.

EVE Uni is an alliance dedicated to helping newbies, may want to try there.

if you want to grief people, you can grab a thrasher, fit it with Autocannons, stick damage mods in the lows, and go pope mining barges. hell, pop 5 or 10 of them and Goons will pay you 10-100M (can't remember which).

Himnos had some good points there, but I would like to underline something that is one of the single most important pieces of having fun in Eve for most people:

Find a corp to play with.

Flying solo is not only hard (in all areas of Eve, collaborating with others lets you force-multiply) but it can also get dreadfully boring really fast, especially if you're dabbling in PvE, as there is limited content. The unlimited potential of Eve really comes in through social interaction, which appears via joining a corp, engaging in direct PvP (note that there are non-combat types of PvP), or other such things where it's not you alone in the depths of space.

That may not work out as expected.

This.

REMINDER: As soon as you undock other players can kill you. The only safe place is staying docked.

Also, as mentioned, if you're an inpatient player who doesn't like to read things then eve MIGHT not be a game you are going to like.

I have lost billions of ISK without undocking.

It wasn't even a scam, just me being really bad.

Sure. That is if you do market things. Spinning your ship is pretty safe (unless you find getting dizzy harmful)

It wasn't the market. I tried to run my own gambling operation and for a while I was billions of ISK in the negative because I forgot about the fact buy orders are lower than sell orders. I fixed it and made billions in profit afterwards. P

You're right, though. Sitting in station AFK (or ship spinning) is completely safe.

Mr Foster.

Reading is your friend in the game. Knowledge is power. Never has this been more true than in this game.

The more you learn about transversal, Active vs Passive tanking, Damage types, tracking etc, the more lethal you will be in this game.

Eve is full of depth. Your only looking outward at the expanse before you. Your actually standing on the precipice of a cliff of depth.

The guides you find out there will be cushions as you dive into this ocean of complexity.

For your exploration:

Each race has a ship with bonuses to scan probes use one of these.

You are probably gonna have to read. You are probably gonna have to do your homework. You are probably gonna have to be patient and plan ahead.

Pfft why would you want a nice and peaceful solo career when this game offers some of the best PvP gameplay for an MMO. Granted it's at an entirely different pace than your typical FPS - with your ship on the line and after a bunch of tactical maneuvering - it's not uncommon to get a pretty crazy adrenaline rush when a fight does kick off. In FPS terms, think of the difference between a Run & Gun FPS and a tactical FPS. In EVE you play for keeps and the "respawn" actually has meaning.

Stick around and try out the different stuff this game has to offer. I guarantee that, if you do, one day in the future you'll look back at those other games and realize that, while they're great idle entertainment, they have absolutely nothing that can match the lasting impression EVE has on you.

Having a nice peaceful career in this game is quite possible. I have been playing off and on for over a year and have been killed by other players about half a dozen times. Several of those were trying to undock in Amamake which was stupid.

Even though there is quite a bit of pvp in the game, for me it just means being careful with my choices.

I spent weeks working on exploration and decided it was just too much work. I tend to think it is worse than mining for boredom.

In my opinion, you are better off running missions for a while before embarking on the exploration career. Many of the skills you train to fly your mission ships will come in handy for exploration and the money will flow better.

You may want to fly the Sisters of Eve Mission arch to continue with your skill development.

If you plan to go down the exploration route, you may want to run missions for the Sisters anyway as their LP store has probe launchers and probes that have bonuses.
