tldr: please place a light source on the player camera in space. This would illuminate your ship and make it pop out in the foreground at all times. Make the light source able to toggle on/off, have color filters, and ability to offset the light source from the camera.

I noticed how much I love looking at my ships when I place the camera between the ship and the sun. This causes it to be very bright, and I can see all the details accurately. In fact, as I fly around I will attempt to center my camera in this way unconsciously in order to bring my ship into the foreground of the screen.

If there was a way to maintain visual consistency by having the ship in the foreground of the screen at all times while moving the camera, it would be very pleasing to the eyes I believe. Having a light source illuminating the ship from the view of the player would accomplish this.

-It would be client side, as there would be no need for players to see each other's lights.
-Toggle ability enables you to check out your ship, but turn off if you prefer to have pure light from the sun.
-Light filters enable the ability to visually seperate light from the sun and light from the camera so as to maintain the realism of flying around a solar system.
-Offset ability allows for shadows, which adds dimension to the ship.

Throw in a ship green screen option while we are at it. Or even a built in ship export that gets all the mapping right including the random widgets and other things defined by the .black files that currently people have to tweak and hack at manually.
