I wonder how long it takes to build these structures not the mention the amount of patience required. I haven't looked through all the pages yet but the first one on page 9 so far seems to be the largest.

It seems to me that coin stacking is one of those things where it's impressive for the first ten seconds or so, before you start to pity the person who invested so much time in something so meaningless. Other activities that I'd put in this category are card houses, absurdly large Lego creations, and all that stuff people make in Minecraft.

I'm not sure what I think of art. I'd like to say that "real" art has something that sets itself apart from Minecraft cathedrals. Something about sculpting a life-size figure of a man performing Olympic activities out of stone seems more genuine than clicking a mouse to place tiles in a 3d sandbox game. However, if you really think about it, they're both trying to create the likeness of whatever they're sculpting by using the tools at hand.

I guess I would say that there are two big differences between real art and goofy little hobbies. The first is a matter of how much effort it requires. The second is a matter of how original the result is.

In light of this distinction, I would rate the coin stacking stuff as medium effort required, with a very low score on the originality scale. The creations that really make you shake your head with pity are the ones that rate progressively higher on the effort scale and progressively lower on the originality scale.

Maybe art is doomed. Our society has gotten so good at recording everything that's been done already and showing it to the entire world that it's very difficult to come up with things that people would consider "original".
