Why is the EVE-map so relatively flat?

Of course the obvious response is: "Because it is designed that way", but I would like to see the EVE-universe expand, but more on the Z-axis. Imagine doubling the current amount of solar systems but having them spread out more below and above the current more flat map. The same obviously goes for stations, planets, asteroid belts, etc. in solar systems. They tend to be more flat than exist in three dimensional space.

And before someone says so: YES I know you can unflatten the map, but still, the solar systems in EVE are relatively flat.

Because galaxies are generally flat.

Solar systems are flat for the most part. It is from the accretion disk.

Doesn't seem flat to me.

If you lean a flat thing it still is flat. Imo.

Interesting, I've always pictured space as this vast, endless thing which spans in all directions.

Hmm, after googling I realize that my grasp on space physics is severely lacking to understand the why, how and such.

The universe is vast and unending. Galaxies, however, tend to form distinct shapes because of gravity and stuff. Ours is spiral I believe, which makes it a spinny-disk shape...

In some cases, it is. Nebula, for example can exist as these large, blob like clouds of dust, matter and young stars.

Galaxies however are flattened as a result of gravity from the SMBH at the core and the spin.

It is however possible to claim that EVE's galaxy could be a more Elliptical galaxy.

The problem is that gameplay wise this causes problems for navigation with people unable to have a simple top down view of regions without resulting in regions overlapping each other on the Z axis (or Y axis if X and Z are on the flat plane).

It would essentially turn out map into a mess in flattened mode and it would turn non-flatted mode into a giant version of what probing is like on the solar system map, except that there are 100s of little dots to get lost in.

We do have eliptical galaxies... he's talking about the entire "World" or Universe map.

If we're talking about the in-game map, I'm pretty sure it's just a map of the New Eden galaxy. If it was the whole universe we'd probably have to do a lot of scrolling before we could see anything useful.

The wiki defines it as a "Star Cluster". Not sure if that is multiple galaxies, or just one clump of one galaxy?

Either way, it's our entire known universe :)

…also, what we play in isn't even a galaxy — it's a star cluster, possibly at the outer end of some spiral arm, so it could simply be very thin at that point.

You could also go with the thoroughly unexciting explanation that It's “flat” because those who built the star gates preferred not to go that far outside of the ecliptic planes of the systems they were in, so “in-plane” systems were favoured over ones that would have generated a larger vertical spread. Bunch of lazy unimaginative bums. P

Keep in mind also that New Eden is just a cluster of stars in a galaxy. I believe New Eden is 106 light years long, 90 light years wide, and 25 light years thick. Compare that to the 100,000 light years the Milky Way is estimated to be across.
