As the title implies, i'm not exactly an expert when it comes to spreadsheets. I've never really used them before, nor am I really familiar with what their use actually is. However, I have read on several occassions that a few market people use them, and have found them to be quite helpful in some way. Although I have not had a problem with making ISK, i'll take any extra advantage I can get if it is not too obnoxious to implement. So... I have some questions about these... things. :o

1. How are spreadsheets used for market activity in Eve?

2. For those who use spreadsheets for market stuff, how useful do you find them?

3. Do you know of any particularly good guides for learning how to create these kinds of spreadsheets?

4. What is your favorite color? Shocked

Hope to hear what the MD experts have to say here! :Smile

General: A spreadsheet is a mere tool to do whatever calculation u want to lay out, the advantage is the rapid development/iteration and the visual ease of use, compared to "tools" like programming or paper/mind calculation. There are other tools that exists like "IPH (ISK per hour)", but many of us use spreadsheets because u can tinker and compose them to your exact needs. For example i use the data highlight functions in excel and find those extremely helpfully to identify opportunities and evaluate the waste amount of data.

1) XML data import from Eve-Central and other sites to grab the prices and orders. Than u simply try to calculate the profit or add the data also to a database for your own historically data. This differs by profession, a trader is looking for trade margins, while a producer at least needs to calculate the production profit. The hauler need to find region differences.

2) Extremely usefully, since i get "current" market data i can rely on, if i uploaded the data just 5mins ago. So i can calculate whatever i like and be sure it reflects actual in-game data. Spreadsheets are also more flexible and even as a programmer myself, i still find it more usefully than writing a "market" tool, since the ability to easily visualize data is what makes a spreadsheet shine.

3) Check/search the Eve lab forum for eve-central xml guides, than there are those:

Yes, I find myself writing tools to automate certain processes, then generating spreadsheets to manipulate for visualization.

They are useful, truely useful.

I've set up a small one to help me ensure that the fee and taxes don't eat my profits when the difference between buy and sell is minimal.

Basically it goes like this.

A is the price of item when bought ( input in any cell, ex F4)
A tax + fee is then added to buy price ( formula =F4+(F4/100*2.5) this will add 2.5 % taxes and fees
B is the price of item when sold (input in any cell, ex J4)
B tax is the price of item with tax deducted from sale price (formula =J4-(J4/100*1) this will deduct 1% taxes
C is A tax minus B tax ( formula would be cell with B tax minus cell with A tax+fee )

This gives a two input spreadsheet that quickly tells you that you can buy a item for ex 5 ISK and sell for as low as 5.18 ISK as still don't take a loss.
You can expand this to calculate profits in % as well.

Another option is to make taxes and fees calculate outside the example above, and then have those values added automatically. At the same page as the rest you'd have inputs for tax and fee at buy and those added in a cell under that. =tax buy+broker fee, and then the same for sales tax. Then you'd link the output of those calculations to the formula in A tax + fee and B tax. ( ex: total fee + tax buy is in cell G8 ) Formula for A tax + fee would then be =F4+(F4/100*G8) The formula would then refer to whatever values it finds in cell G8. Useful when stanings and skills changes the expenses instead of rewriting every formula.

Hope I helped to clear it up instead of confusing. Basically, it saves you loads of time

Step 1: Wonder how much money you can make producing 100mn MWD
Step 2: List quantities of all inputs and their costs on market including BP and job time//install cost
Step 3: Profit (maybe) else -> go back to step 1 and substitute 100mn MWD with XXXXXX

the only thing I had trouble with was getting my spreadsheets to update prices automatically. If I could get them to do that AND check my assets API to see how many units of X i have in station Y, then I'd be a rich guy.

You just have to create an xml cell that leads to a price website and it will update automatically as the site updates its data. If that's what you were asking.
