Created this alt to start wars with small scale corps, thought it would be a good way to start learning to fight other players.

Any tips from people who have been doing this a while ?

No. What would be the point of forming a fleet then?

Join RvB if you want to learn pvp.

Now stop spam decs from one man corp, it's annoying.

If you want to learn pvp doing solo decs is not the best way. I'd suggest: RvB, Eve Uni, and the courses Agony Unleashed offers.

A newbie in a dessie could certainly engage a fleet of mining barges, but no, not a fleet of anything that can shoot back.

Train your nav skills to max and make sure you are as fast as you can be quickly. Fit arties to your thrasher and kite the crap out of stuff.

Remember that even if you have newb DPS, if you are able to kite an opponent you'll still kill them. Just slower. Sure being able to put a target down quickly is pretty necessary if you want to ensure you kill bait or tackle before the blob comes but you'll have fun doing it :)

Are people seriously responding with a flat 'No' as in 'No, it's not possible'?

This is EVE.

It's not expected but it's certainly not unheard of for a Destroyer to take on a poorly organized group of small ships.

Should you be throwing yourself at gangs in a solo Destroyer as an introduction to PvP, however?

No, almost certainly not.

Some good ideas above, but don't join E-UNI unless you want to lose several ships to no losses in an overweight fleet of 70 vs 4 and then stare angrily at them from the undock for 50 minutes.

I know of a couple of PvPers who started in Eve Uni and are quite good.
