Watching for combat probes

So I am starting to nose my way into low sec to do some exploration and I am looking for a little advice on watching for probes. Since you are unable to see combat probes when you try and use overview settings the list for things on scan can go for pages in some systems.

One solution I have seen, the guy mentioned just watching the size of the scroll bar and watching it to shrink, but this can be a little unreliable when you people are popping in and out of the system. I have also sorted alphabetically which helps a little but since there are a few different names for combat probes, you still have to scroll around a bit.

When scanning for probes I have been keeping my scan range on max, can I maybe shorten it up to help, or is that unadvisable?

Any advice on using the scanner to watch for probes would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Sort the scans out by type, scroll down to C.

Only keep the things you really care about seeing on your overview (and thus the scanner). The most common source of clutter are POS modules - when you remove these, it should be relatively easy to spot any probes or unknown ships.

i'm not gonna pretend to be an overview/d-scan expert, but there's a default tab "PvP" that has served me very well in many situations. i also rarely change the range from max or the angle from 360 - when watching my own @ss that is.

When a d-scanning do not only look for combat probes there are multiple types core/combat, sisters, and rss. If you are in a plex and someone is seeking you out they do not always use combats because they can take longer.

Always willing to help all you have to do is ask, though if you're in the other fleet I may not help the way you want. Just a heads up. Pub Channel: Lost Souls Trading Post

Set up a combat overview that lets you see things for what you're doing but not much more. What I use is, roughly:

Player ships
Enemy NPC ships
Scanner Probes
Combat Scanner probes
Large Celestial Objects

Then check the "use overview settings" checkbox on your dScanner. Since celestials and NPCs don't show up on dScan by default, that'll keep your stuff pretty clear of everything that's not potentially dangerous.

The main mistake to make with dScan filter sets is to add wrecks, those will clutter the hell out of your list.

Thanks all for the advice. I was under the assumption that if I had checked "Use Overview Settings" that combat probes would not show up, I will have to double check that once back home tonight.

Way back CCP broke the filter for probes, so the only solutions were:

A. Not to use filtering (overview settings).

B. Use a custom overview settings with probes enabled.

Most people didn't know about option B.

CCP has since added probes back to the filtering options.

Google "Brother Benthor"

Download his overview pack.

That will give you a reasonable set of overviews, although you'll have to tweak them (player has no standing etc).

It depends wholly on the overview tab that you have selected. Say you have a tab for mining and a tab for pvp. Your d-scan results will differ if you have "Use Overview Settings", depending on which tab is active when you hit scan.

I generally add probes to all of my overview tabs since I rarely have them on grid with me.
