So I've finally got myself into the grind of missions and I need a ship that can handle them. I can use all t2 projectiles and shield tanking modules.

Here are some thoughts I was having, anyone got some info on:

I was thinking of the Maelstrom but will it have problems with smaller/closer targets?
The Typhoon could work but id need to do some work in Heavy Drones and Missiles
The Tempest seems like its too broad to be a good PvE ship.
The Sleipner is a possibility but where do I start with one of them?
Im guessing the Tornado is somewhat off topic but can it work?

Thanks in advance!

Maelstrom should be your bread and butter for lvl4 missions. It has a drone bay for smaller targets. Whether if you fit for 1400s or 800s, you have enough fall off to alpha small frigs burning towards you at low transversal. Sleipnir is a good alternative but not necessary for the skill points it requires to fly it. Tornado is a good supplement as a dps'er but has no tank whatsoever to sustain through the whole mission. Typhoon and tempests are doable but still sucks imo.

tl;dr: stick with the Mael. There are tons of pve fits for it on the web.

8x 800s
med
AB
xlASB 400 charges
shield boost amp
2 invuln
a tracking comp
low
3 gyros
2 te

generic rigs

5 meduim
10 scout drones

you can boost 10 times x 1800 shield and after that use cap - hopefully most of the incoming damage will be dead by then.
don't forget to turn off auto reload and auto repeat for the asb - you don't want to be unable to boost in the middle of a fight, even if it's from your cap.
Alternatively fit some gist L booster, without the ab you'll have more than 10 mins of tank.

I wouldn't be so quick to discredit the Typhoon.

It might demand a lot of skillpoints, but in the end it is a rather awesome ship.

Space. It seems to go on and on forever. But then you get to the end and a gorilla starts throwing barrels at you.

Good drone skills will complement the Maelstrom's gun platform nicely. A flight of T2 Hobgoblins flying with Drone Interfacing IV will shred most rat frigates while you put the guns on BC and battleship targets; I've also tried experimenting with a mixed flight of light web and painter drones, to slow up and increase sig radius on cruisers enough for the guns to take them down. (Cruisers are an artillery Maelstrom's weakness; they're all too likely to tank a flight of medium T2 drones, and they're too fast to reliably hit with arty. That's why I'm trying the web/paint drone combo.)

Bear in mind, the Maelstrom tanks like a brick smokehouse, but also moves like one; for some L4's you'll need to fit an afterburner or even a MWD.

Typhoon is an awesom ship, but it really shines in small gang pvp, the mael will out perform it in missions almost everytime even at maxed skills.

Use an active tanked mael with 800's, and just shoot the small stuff first (split your guns into 2 groups). Do it untill they get close then blap the large stuff n use your drones to kill whats left of the frigs etc.

Machariel use minmatar guns, and is soooo much faster than the maelstrom. It will be worth it, it have so much more mobility and range so you dont need barrage and can do specific damage types.

Also comes with the requirements of having trained both Minmatar and Gallente ships, as well as a 1 billion+ pricetag compared to the 150-175 million pricetag on the Maelstrom.

So.

Yeah.

Vargur, or Mach.

If not, maelstrom, full gank mode.

The Machariel's really an "endgame" type ship - like the man said, it's over a billion ISK for the hull. Ultimately worth it once you can afford it, but the Maelstrom's not a bad intermediate step while you build up your bank account, given that it calls for much the same skillset. (Well, except that you need a very different piloting style for the Mael than the Mach.)

The Vargur's also nice, but it costs as much as a Machariel, and the Marauder skill training time is enough to make a grown-up cry.

The Tornado can out-gank the Maelstrom (and probably approach the firepower of the Mach or Vargur as well), but its problem is that it's got a beer-can tank; you'd need to speed-tank, and one webbing frigate will doom it. (Pretty much the only T3 I'd dare to bring into a L4 mission space would be the Talos, with its drone bay, but even then, not really recommended.)

(Although who knows? Flying a Tornado might make good practice for the Machariel, given that they both put a premium on speed, but the Mach can tank as well as move, and the Tornado, well ... beer can.)
