Science 5, Research 5, Engineering 5, Electronics 5, Scientific Networking L2/L3, Metallurgy 4 are obvious first steps. Take a look at the Invention tab on any T1 item you're interested in doing invention on (for T2 version), get those requirements to at least L4 on each. Plan your remaps accordingly.

Thanks for the input, ive been so into the game havent had a chance to check responses. One thing I have yet to learn is all Im hearing about Contracts. Dont know what they are exaclty, accidently pulled up tabs with them, but it seems to be a big part of manufacturing, which is the path im headind now after talking to a few folks and getting my salvaging skills up

Train gunnery and ship command skills, get less boring friends and go out and shoot stuff.
Red vs. Blue is an excellent group to join for new (and old) pilots.

Learn some pvp skills, and things like "shield tanking". Whether you enjoy it or not, pvp will come to you. So you better learn it sooner than later. Because you

Contracts isn't to do with Manufacturing, it's to do with selling / trading / moving stuff around.

Certain items can't be sold on the market, assembled ships, items that aren't seeded on the market etc, so these can be sold via contracts.
You can also 'swap' items on contract by putting something required in the I will receive box
You can also use contracts for getting stuff moved around via courier contracts, specify the end station and set the reward & collateral and essentially someone gets paid for shifting your stuff around.

That's a brief look on contracts, I'm no expert since I rarely use them though Blink

It's not something you should be worried about yet, concentrate on getting your manufacturing skills up, Production Efficiency 5 is a must, especially when you're starting off and building small items for little profits.

Trawl through this forum and look for other threads asking the same questions, and read through those, there's some good advice out there.

If all your friends are going into mining, go Social/Connections + Refining

If you can get good refining skills while grinding up distribution missions to get a perfect refine with a local NPC corp, you can turn all the ore that your friends make into minerals without any waste or loss. Your friends will be able to go deeper into mining skills since they won't have to divert their training into redundant refining skills.

In the cat-and-mouse game that is low sec, there is no shame in learning to be a better mouse.
