Question about Ninja Salvaging

Yesterday I was reading the post from someone who is new to EVE and is enjoying stealing cargo from mission runners and hoping they will initiate aggression. At some point in the post, ninja salvaging popped up with good reviews of its profitability for newbies.

As someone who is pretty new himself, I am interested in trying it out. In my mind I was going to fit a destroyer up with salvagers and go at it, but down the thread it was mentioned that a vigil would be better for ninjaing. Is there a reason that the vigil is so prized? I don't see any bonuses about the hull to indicate anything special from it.

I tried asking in rookie help channel but it was ignored so I was hoping the people here would know.

Thanks,

Probably because of the velocity boost it gets for each Minmatar Frigate skill level, which would also be an increase MWD speed.

When Bon Scott died and he appeared before St. Peter at the gates of Heaven, St. Peter looked at his record and told him he couldn't get in. Just then, God screams at Peter, "Let him in, Karen Carpenter is driving me nuts. I want to hear some music with balls. We'll haggle over the paperwork later." At least I hope that's what happened.

The Vigil's speed is definitely good, especially with an aterburner, for when you need to speed tank the occasional rat aggro while ninja salvaging...but if you are trying to bait a carebear into shooting you I'd use a different ship that isn't so often associated with ninja salvagers. Perhaps an Imicus, or Heron, or even a Probe that'll help you scan them down faster.

For new players, it's hard to beat ninja salvaging. Get a ship that can field a single drone, like the imicus. That way you can attack some of the rats and get a portion of the bounty and sec status when the rat dies. Add that up with all the juicy salvage and rat poop loot and you'll not have to worry for ISK for awhile. Just keep a close eye on the carebear your stealing from. They like to try warping out and leaving you to die. Don't let it discourage you. Just pay attention, warp out when he does, and wait for him at the mission gate to come back. Drives em nuts! :)

If you are doing it solely for profit, you can also just ask in local. Oftimes mission runners just blitz their mission anyway and would be willing to trade you their bookmarks/fleet you (for a small fee?). Saves you the trouble to scan them down so it is a win-win situation.
I think there is even a specialized channel for this....

a vigil will run/salvage circles around a noctis. 2 scan rigs, 2 salvagers because i used a cloak in my NS days.. the cloak is so you dont scare off the mission runner or make him shoot wrecks, and you sit there claoked and wait for him to dock, then u salvage all his wrecks before his noctis even gets there, thats how fast the vigil is with decent scan skills. its really a waste of time per isk tho unless you're really hard up for the 2-5 million you might make in 1 hour. sadly it doesnt pay like it used to. the noctis flooded the market and the demand is low

If the primary purpose is to just loot and steal, then yes, I'd suggest the Vigil. However, it's cargo space isn't quite as good as say the Heron or Probe that gets a bonus to cargo capacity....so you'd be able to steal less stuff overall with a Vigil per trip.

Regarding your use of the cloak, I suppose this would work if you are just cloaking up at the first acceleration gate of the mission, but if you are going into the room with the missioner he's gonna see you pop up on overview since you can't warp cloaked.

True, but the tears man. The tears! They are delicious, and it's hilarious to watch mission bears blow up their wrecks. It causes them to slow down, make less money, and waste ammunition. It's always a bonus if they sperg hate in local at you :)

The way to profit by ninjaing is to get people to shoot at you, violence their shiny boats and loot their wrecks. How does asking permission help you get people to shoot you?

Back in the day the stabber was highly recommended. You can fit a 100MN AB on that thing and quite a few salvagers too. It also has reasonable cargo hold for the loot.

Edit: this was from the days before 'ninja salvaging' became more about the baiting and less about the salvage.

As far as I understand it, ninja salvaging can't be for baiting, since it doesn't make you go flashy for the mission runner. It's looting you're looking for when you want them to shoot at you I guess.
Of course you can do both.

For doing both I like my Imicus. Probably not the most effective, but it's a decent one-in-all ship for scanning, looting and salvaging, and small and fast enough that I survived, with one exception where I was stupid, every attempt of mission runners to shoot it.
Well, and I'm not trained flying other races' frigates at the moment, though it wouldn't be too much to change that, I guess.

The idea with the single drone which can leech bounty off the mission runner sounds interesting, by the way, I didn't think of that so far. My Imicus even has three drones!
(Edit: which by the way helped me tremendously that one time a mission runner warped away and left behind his warrior II drones.. I can't use T2 drones yet -though soon- so I just threw my T1 ones out and scooped up the T2 ones :) They are worth quite a bit to a newbie like me.)

In case you didn't know, you can scoop them to your cargo bay as well as the drone bay.

I did not know this, indeed!
This.. uh .. kinda invalidates my point about a large drone bay being nice, but it is good news!

Aside from me feeling silly now.

Don't ninja salvage/loot.
Its not nice to the other players.
We should all be nice to each other.

Its not stealing if they freely give it to you, give you access to it or leave it floating in space. Worst comes to worse you can always shoot them.

I rolled an alt on my second account a month or so ago and was just ******* around one day doing ninja-looting. You can make some fairly decent space cash from mission poo, nothing special really but enough have fun. You get to see the whole gamut of mission runners this way, from the broken bots (I always try to room-aggro these guys but have yet to see it work), to the ignore-you types, to the butthurt carebears, to the p cool null-sec alts who chat you up in local. I don't really try for baiting, it's all about the poo for me.

I use a Heron for scanning, a Cormorant for the actually looting (MWD + 2 x MSE), and a Badger to haul the loot and the other two ships around (they're un-rigged). May not be the most optimal way to do it but it's more fun when you can pack up and hit another mission hub fifteen minutes later. Once the alt has a few more fitting skills I'm going to try putting a Railgun on the Cormorant to get in on the bounties (if that actually works).

Speaking of butthurt, check out this e-mail I got from someone when I was starting out and trying ninja salvaging:

For kicks, I e-mailed him the other day and asked what the tab was at.

I have a lover, her name is EVE. I see her every night and all she asks in return is that I have a pilot's license.
