Yes, I did. Actually I've been working at DESY Hamburg a few years back and am therefore not a stranger to the subject. In addition to that, I was honest in the 'great day' remark - sorry to have given you a false impression by that hot chick pic Blink

WTS H-B particles as part of a weight-loss process...

In addition, what happens to the Large Handheld Collander now they've found H-B? 36km underground fairground ride?

I imagine they will try to manipulate the HB particle,

It will give them something to do for the next 30 years plus they will get loads of under-the-table funding from various goverments so someone can successfully create a HB bomb and the whole glorious solar system will disappear in a flash when some religious crackpot can't see the irony of using this device to create his version of armageddon.

Apart from that +1 for the fairground ride it would be a blast!

Without the Higgs field or the Higgs-boson particle, we would not be "together". An unimaginably infinite number of atoms would simply be moving throughout the universe, never combining to anything and thus none of us would be formed.

You'd still have electromagnetism without the Higgs field, so in theory atoms would still occasionally pass close by other atoms and end up forming molecules - but there wouldn't be any gravity pulling the atoms together across large distances so the number of meetings would be substantially lower than in the real universe.

You certainly wouldn't see any large aggregations of matter without the Higgs though because electromagnetism is no good at holding things together across large distances.

Because of this, stars wouldn't be able to form, which would mean that atoms heavier than hydrogen wouldn't have been produced by nuclear fusion.

When your grandchildren ask you where you were when the Higgs Boson discovery was announced, you must tell them, "I was out destroying internet spaceships, and it was good". That is all.

Hacker: Don't tell me about the press. I know exactly who reads the papers: the Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country; The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country; The Times is read by people who actually do run the country; the Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country; the Financial Times is read by people who own the country; The Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country; and The Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it is.

Sir Humphrey: Prime Minister, what about the people who read The Sun?

Bernard: Sun readers don't care who runs the country, as long as she's got big ****.

Yeah. Hardcore religious people claimed that when the LHC was switched on, it would create a black hole that would instantly destroy the planet.

Those crazies will come up with any excuse to keep us all in the dark ages.

The suggestion was that negatively charged strangelets could be produced that may cause the auto catalytic conversion of ordinary matter into more strangelet material until the whole of the planet was consumed. Microscopic black holes are short lived and quickly evaporate through the Hawking radiation mechanism so they don''t represent a theoretical hazard.

In the light of this awesome discovery I hope CCP will try to get a grasp of basic physics and put them into the game...

Not to be a party pooper, but they have found something that they think is the Higgs Boson

"We have a discovery - we have observed a new particle consistent with a Higgs boson. But which one? That remains open."

So good news but not quite there yet .

Well yes, the specifics still need to be hammered out, but for the time being this largely confirms that the current model is accurate. The real question(at least from what I've gathered in my limited understanding) is if there is a variety of boson types and just how accurate our current model is. Either way, it's a great day for science.

If they have a great day, but again for my limited mind as well, this is all about stats and sometimes things appear in the figures but then when more data is added these anomalies can just disappear again. Look at the faster than light fiasco a little while back. So while I do hope they have done it, the cynic in me will wait for when they say "we have "definitely" found it".

Brian Cox does a pretty good job of explaining it for the laymen.

Also I am very happy. July 4 will be extra special now. Big smile

Skip to about 7:00 to get right to the Higgs explanation.

So, judging by past history the second step would be to figure out how this discovery can go boom and kill lots of people, right?

No, that'd be the first step, they are still at the pre-alpha phase ATM though.
