I'll preface this by saying I have not finished all the Chronicles yet (plan to finish them in about 4 days), but have looked for answers to these two questions for about 2 days now without finding any useful information.

I started playing this game not really caring about the lore. I've come from games where it really didn't matter, nor was it interesting. But now that I have been reading the lore of this game, I find it utterly fascinating. This probably stems from the fact that I thoroughly love Sci-Fi (Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, etc.) and good writing. Due to the fact that I am interested in the lore, I would like to flesh out a back story for my character. I'm not so much worried about the name, as I am worried about my racial selection. My characters name I can change in my opinion to soot whatever I feel like (I chose this name so my group of friends would know who I am.) When I started I had no idea that my race affected nothing except for a few skills, and all my friends thought Caldari was the best race. Yet I ended up not liking Caldari. Not the ships, nor the race. But I ended up finding myself in a love affair with the Amarrian people. I have now started training for some Amarr mission ships, and have been missioning for an Amarr group. My first question is if it would be lore acceptable to basically make my character into an Amarr citizen. Not retconning him into an actual Amarrian, but someone who got fed up with his Megacorp and started believing the Amarrian religion is the correct one. Possibly thinking, if he does well enough, that he could still find grace with God and striving to become as close as an amarr citizen as possible (not one of the higher us mind you). My reason for even wanting to do this, is because I've been missioning and flying pure Amarr for the past few days, and plan to continue on this path. I would just change the Character, if it wouldn't have in game consequences. I also plan on going into Comm. Arts Teaching as a profession, and could really use some work writing for fun, to help me get ready for college, and the Eve world would help me cement some of that, along with fleshing out characters (I enjoy writing, just never have anything to write about, my in game activities could help remedy such situation.) So, if anyone has any ideas about what I could do, I am open to taking any: criticism, ideas, pure unadulterated hatred towards my mustache.

My second question is about Skill Books. This is more of a minor thing, I'm just wondering if they are legitimate books that we are reading. Or are they just injected into the cerebral cortex. My reason for asking this, is because we we inject the skill book. I don't right click and choose "read".

Thank you for your time in reading this and any feedback/help that you post!

Excellent post. Big smile

Your first question.

You can make your character whatever you want him to be, is the direct answer. But to make him consistently believable (there are players who know their favourite lore subjects like the back of their hands) you're going to have to delve into the general EVE mythos at first as a whole (which you're doing) and refine both him and his beliefs (in this case) when certain information avialable out there 'rings true' -meaning something you think your character will identify with very strongly indeed. How long this will take is up to you. You've already decided that the Amarr mythos (whilst abandoning the generic Caldari profit ethos) is something your character would match up with -and this is a great start.

There are roleplayers who post in the InterGalactic Summit forum (eve web fora and in-game) here who have done this very successfully -their character's name is readily identified with a cause, a place or a set of core beliefs (or all of these). Talk to them. The sky is the limit but do bear in mind that, in at least some people's eyes, Eve canon or lore is a bit inconsistent and/or neglected nowadays.

This is both a hindrance and a help. It helps you as a player to perhaps find a niche of your own, where canon is vague. Even then you'll find inspiration somewhere -but be sure to check out as much information as you are able in order to refine him as a character.

Back in 2008, I decided that for this character, the Krusual tribe (Minmatar) was the bee's knees. It's an 'unplayable' tribe but that didn't stop or deter me in the least. With such little information on the Krusual (even today, there's hardly any) -it gave somewhat of a licence to get all creative. It took time and five years later I think I'm there or thereabouts with that decision. Did I enjoy the journey? You bet Big smile

What solidified this character's 'self' weren't peoples or tribes, though, but a place. I made her look for an in-game place to call 'home'. She found her home and took it from there, reading up on 'home' as much as possible. That it sort of matched with the Krusual tribe's modern-day 'home' was a bonus at first, but an affirmation followed closely behind. That was the bingo moment, as it were.

Note the third person view above. If you can seperate your Eve goals from Comrade SLFreeman's own goals very distinctly -this will help greatly IMHO!

I am sure Amarrian or Khanid or Ammatar roleplayers can offer fantastic (better) pointers from their own experiences of 'the Dark Side'.

As to your second question, there are a lot of players who can answer better on the subject of injected skills and what-have-you.

Good luck. Comrade "Moustache" Freeman Blink

You're not the only Caldari who prefers Amarr culture and vessels around here ;)

The first thing you have to understand is that the Empire, being a feudal institution, does not have "citizens" so much as "subjects".

That said, so long as you get that even subject-ship isn't something the Empire would hand out freely, and that he would very likely have to prove himself first, then I see no reason why it couldn't be RPed that way.

Acording to the Empyrean Age book I just finished reading last night skill books are basically software loaded into our pod implants that automatically teach us the skills. How they go about it specifically I did not see mentioned but I would think it would be similar to installing a new program on a computer today, only with the human brain.

I hope that answered that question. I do not have the info to help with the RP question as I do not do that myself.

Thanks for all of your answers. They were extremely helpful. I know I will need to work on the RP story, but you answered some of my basic questions. This will most definitely help out my character writing. Of course, if any one else has any suggestions. I'm always willing to take them. Special thanks to Reptiles for that answer , it wasn't anything I was going to use for RP'ing, but something I've wanted to know since I started roleplaying.

Yeah, it's one of the few things TEA got -right-, honestly.

Whether the skills are actually imparting information - some kind of neurally accelerated learning - or actually rewiring your brain to better be able to function with certain kinds of equipment is unclear and a point of debate among the RP community. What is clear is that they are doing something through your capsuleer jacks, and are certainly not textbooks you'd actually read.
