MENSA: I am considering joining...

The only requirement is that you score on a legitimate assessment within the highly gifted range(2% of the population).

Here is my dilemma, I have taken many many tests and assessments over the years, especially when I was younger. I don't have the records in front of me as they have to be requested but I think I remember scoring high enough to qualify on one of the tests I took when I was 17.

However this is something that follows you forever and is essentially tied to your membership to MENSA.

My question is, should I pay the money to be retested and potentially score higher, like in the 140+ range or should I just jump through the hoops to get a certified copy of one of my older scores and use that to qualify for MENSA?

I want my initial membership score to be something that accurately reflects my talent, not something that is barely passing that I took when I was 17.

Advice?
Suggestions?

Why would you want to join?

I too though about joining, just because I can, but I don't really like mensa as an organization. They seem like cocky assholes that think they are better then others just because they score high on IQ.

I took the test, they asked me to join.

I laughed as I had a firm grasp of their business model.

Protip - Mensa is also a business, while worthwhile to find out the exact number of your iq for yourself, I don't see the point in bragging about it or joining clubs for the people who do give a damn about it. Hell, just on the tea break between the two tests it was readily apparent everyone was up their own arse as was probably I in retrospect at the time.

Additional - arse has wiggly red lines underneath it.... ? Shocked

The general consensus seems to be that MENSA is full of elitist jerks with high IQs.
How is that different from goonswarm?

GoonSwarm is full of elitist jerks with low IQs...
They would never accept me so maybe MENSA is the path for me.

My advice: Mensa is for jerks who want everyone to know how smart they are. Avoid.
In my experience, most Mensans tend to keep their membership a secret, because if they don't they get branded elitist jerks. Roll

My experience has been *significantly* different. Mensa is actually the "low end" of genius groups, but it attracts the kind of people who really, really, REALLY want to tell you about them being in Mensa. Bragging about being in Mensa is a lot like Al Bundy bragging about the four touchdowns he scored in high school. If you want to be impressive, join Prometheus Society or Mega Society. One out of 50 monkeys can join Mensa, provided they can juggle balls well enough.

Maybe I should just join all of them lol...
I have met some really nice people who are in MENSA, but you may have a valid point.

I'd just get ETS or whoever to send them your SAT or ACT scores. It costs about $35 bucks. Why retest? It's a pain, and it's risky. You never know if you might have slipped into just the top 3%. Smile

By the way, you might want to check out the members' photos on your local Mensa chapter's website. Style and suavete may not be Mensa members' strong points.

In that case, allow me to apologise on behalf of Mensans everywhere. What you've seen are hopefully the odd cases (the 2% of the 2% if you will); people who forget that we only care about math/logic and nothing else. The ones I've met (be it at formal or pub meets) usually agree that intelligent does not equal smart, and therefore prefer to listen before speaking. (wait, does that say anything about me?)

Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.

I think I will join the Mega Society, they seem to be the most elite of the HiQ societies.
Maybe this will bring me pleasure.
Maybe girls will be more attracted to me. (probably not)

Heh, indeed indeed. Listening before speaking is a sign of a high smart quotient. When I meet someone like that at a party, they usually turn out to be the real deal. For example, a materials science researcher, rather than a tech sales regional director.

I took one of their online tests (on the official website) and managed to get 100% in about 10-15 minutes. if you're good with patterns, it's nothing to get.
unfortunately, my effectiveness at finding patterns can sometimes cause an OCD level of wanting to fix something so the pattern fits.
EDIT: and I have no intention of joining them. the stigma that I've heard from this group is almost as bad if not worse than Scientology.

Seriously? Comparing a high IQ society to Scientology?

Scientology: Forced Abortion, Child Slave Labor, Concentration Camps, Murder, Molestation, Paramilitary, Responsible for the single largest security breech in the history of the US.

MENSA: Stuck up, lacking style, self-interested, etc.

Really?

Really?

I was comparing the social stigma of them, not their activities.
