I've just had over a year off and have now resubbed (damn those CCP emails!)

I used to love getting close and brawling, but as of when I left it seemed unused. I'm looking now at what I can fly really and I'm not into speed and shields, I've been putting it off as long as I can remember. When I popped back into Eve over a year ago I ignored Tech 3 Cruiser, as I couldn't afford one so didn't see the point in skilling up on them.

Everytime I come back to Eve I really want to love my Gallente ships, especially using blasters too, but they just never seemed to fit in, well not for a long time anyway.

So as I'm returning I'm wondering what to start using (there is a lot to catch up on from the last year).

I used to especially love the Astarte & Eos.
Do command ships get used much nowadays?

Are there any others you can recommend I re-take a look at nowadays?

Cheers,
CG

Frigates wise: the daredevil is exactly what you're looking for. best faction frig by a mile.

Rail guns work well these days. Good default optimal range to use antimatter. most of the time you'll be doing better dps with rails than blasters unless your <2km - which is rare since the web nerf.

medium railguns don't really work well on anything though.

They do surprisingly. Apart from EFT numbers, i am really starting to dislike medium blasters. The vigilant is just as good with rails as it is with blasters when you factor in the DPS loss from falloff. Adding in a faction web to this equation seals the deal.

I hated rails and arty until i tried them. They are definitely worth it.

This

Good in gangs and as per usual king of station undocks and gate camps, for fleets is still awful. After future ships rebalance maybe

No way. The vigilant does have amazing fitting, but with 250mm rails you start running into cpu issues, and need an acr rig to also fit the 1600 plate. The break even point between 250mm's with javelin and neutrons with null is 11.4 km. To me that says that a vigilant with rails has an edge over blasters if you want to hold the target at the edge of web range, presumably out of range of the target's own weapons. However that is really only a consideration in a 1v1 fight, and anything you can web at that range, you're probably better off if you have blasters and move in for the kill immediately. In a many-vs-many then you'll definitely want to do so. If you want to shoot stuff outside of web range, you should be doing it in a vaga/cyna, or completely refit your vigilant for shields, disregard the web, and enjoy shooting 8+21km with Null, and still not fit railguns, or do the above with a deimos. If you want to shoot farther than a TE-fit null deimos/vigilant, then fit rails on a deimos, because the vigilant has a base 35km lock range.

tldr; falloff bonuses on null are too good, 250's +1600 RT require extra pg, plus , falloff bonus of vigilant is wasted on railguns, vigilant's lock range makes rails a waste.
