Im not sure if anyone came up with this idea yet, but here it is.
How about giving the orca a Force field generator module it can act just like a POS shield with all of the same propertys but on a much smaller scale
instead of the bubble being 15.000 meters, it can be 3500 meters from the center of the orca, to protect all fleet mining ships
within 3500 meters of the orca. Most of the coding is already made for the POS shield, and the module can be only fitted to an orca.

1. Give the Orca a forth hi slot, just for the use of a force field generator and nothing else.
2. Give the orca a 15.M3 strontium clathrates fuel bay to power the Force field generator 5 times, or for 5 minutes.
3. The cycle time for the force field generator could be 60 seconds and 1 unit of strontium clathrates will be used to activate the force field generator.
4. All the ships target locks in the bubble will be broken untill the force field generator finishes its cycle and shuts down.
5. All ships that are not in the corp or fleet are pushed away apon the activation of the force field generator.
6. The orca's fuel bay can be only refilled docked in the station not in space.

I dont think this is to much ask for, the force field generator can give the real miners a chance to protect their ships from gankers and the option to warp to the station till the gankers are gone.
This would be a good step for the miners like myself to get back to mining and doing what we were doing before the heavy ganking of hulks, macks, and all other indi ships.

Knowing the general responses to people wanting to protect their mining assets you're probably going to get flamed.

For me though, I love the idea.

It might make Orca's a bit too powerful though. Imagine nullsec mining. You have your Rorqual in your POS for ore compression and mining bonuses and your Orca in the field to supply more bonuses, intermediate ore collection and fleet protection. Your corp's combat fleet can be up to 5 jumps away and still be able to make it back to protect the mining fleet should it get attacked.

If you made the module activatable only in high sec it might work though.

I'm sure there would be many ganker tears if this was brought in.

Great idea!

Just one small tweak and you have my support.

Make it so the Orca has to 1km away from an active POS Control Tower when it activates its protective shield and this will work very well.

There is no "safe" place in EvE exept staying docked.

Step 1: Amass a fleet
Step 2: Get a bunch of Orcas equipped with these shielding devices
Step 3: Start fighting against your enemies
Step 4: When ships are in danger, have them retreat back to the shields of one or two Orcas with the shield active.
Step 5: Alternate between several Orcas to have a mobile, on field base that cannot be penetrated
Step 6: ????????
Step 7: Profit

To counter that you could make it so that any ships that fit the criteria of being allowed in the bubble (ie in the same fleet [EDIT] or corp [/EDIT]) which aren't either industrial ships or mining ships collapse the bubble.

That makes it purely useful in mining ops and of no use for combat ops.

Honestly, I have no problems with this, as long as the Orca remains shootable just like a POS tower, and the module cannot be activated in hisec, just like other bubbles cannot.

A tower isn't shootable when in reinforced mode which is, I assume, what the OP meant this to be: a short burst of reinforced shield.

I don't see why this shouldn't be use in high sec. I think it's primary use would be for high sec.

Basically a not-so-weird idea, but only if you keep that mechanic out of hisec.

On the other side, why don't you just build a pos?

You dont quite get the OPs idea do you...

His point is to deffend the mining ships from ganking.
Neither keeping it out of HiSec or building a POS would help here.

I like the idea, but it could and would be seriously abused in game. (by not limiting it to mining op use)

What i ment for the force field generator is to be used in Hi security space, a small corp or alliance is not going to mine in low or null security space with out heavy support wich no small corp or alliance has. The miners like myself only mine in hi securty space, that is where we are having the biggest problem with the gankers in hi security space. If used in low or null securty space the orca would be the target cause the orca cant move while the bubble is active. I know all the gankers are going to cry about the force field module cause thay will loose out on eazy hulk or mack kills and clam its unfair because thay cant kill the industrial ships, i dont see how the force field generator can be abused if it is geared to protect the mining fleet.

Let the gankers cry. Their tears taste sweet.

Really though, it wouldn't stop high sec ganking. All it would do is mean that people who band together have a defence against high sec gankers. Those solo or very small fleets would still be attackable and those who get ganked 3 times without refuelling in a station (there would be some) would also be vulnerable.

So, a decent high sec ganking corp could have a field day with a load of very cheap frigates to force the usage of the orca fuel so that on the 4th assault they use bigger, better ships safe in the knowledge that the Orca hasn't got any shield fuel left. Obviously this would require the orca pilot to go refuel so either they could catch the hulks as soon as the orca warps out if they're dumb enough to stick around or they could gank the lot if the orca doesn't return to refuel fast enough after the last lot has been used.

In conclusion, those who whine at this are those who perform high sec ganks and don't want it to be any harder than it is now, ie, anything other than simples.

EDIT: This would also move the orca from being predominantly an alt ship to being a necessary pilot as he would need to react very fast to anyone warping in aggressively in order to avoid any mining ships popping. As discussed in many many threads they tend to pop on one or two volleys.

Allow it in high sec, really the gankers would just bring more gank if they really wanted to take out the hulks under the shield. Or they would go find easier pickings. I doubt losing the killmails on 4 hulks really matters because they are shielded when three belts over there is someone solo jetcan mining that is easy pickings.

This takes multiple pilots working together in order to produce a result.

Sounds like a good plan.

+1

I would leave it up to CCP balance regarding refueling. They might leave it to one 5 minute cycle, but allow refueling.
(The hulk pilots could risk leaving the shields to mine in that time... emphasis on risk)

You are right.

This would inspire other miners to come together as fleets or to join indi corps that can give the type of protection with the force field generator.

I can see it. A bunch of droneboats hide in shield and kill attackers without retribution, in highsec.

How about you accept that highsec space is not safe... and that you should tank your hulk when mining there.... If you don't want to tank your hulk, you will be succeptible to ganks and should have a COMBAT ship on standby (like a blackbird, not an Orca) to defend them...

Hulk with 2 MLU will have < 15k EHP (easy to gank within the 20s it takes concord to arrive in a 0.5 system).
Hulk with 1 MLU should have > 22k EHP (harder to gank within the alotted time)
Hulk with 0 MLU should have > 29k EHP (solidly hard to gank within the alotted time).

Add a support ship like logistics, or defense ship like a BB, and suddenly it's not so hard to defend your hulks...
Additionally, CCP is revamping mining ships, so you'll have a nice, heavily tanked ship for highsec mining... It won't be as efficient as the hulk, but that's the expected and appropriate tradeoff!!!

I just don't see the need for this, and have serious fears about it's abuse....

The force field will only allow industrals ships in the bubble no combat ships, combat ships can protect them selfs if attacked in hi sec.

That's news to me....

Since this is based off of POS shields with their limitations too, we can use our drones from inside those shields as well?

Awesome!

Have you ever tried to warp into an unfriendly POS?? Or have you ever tried to fly into an unfriendly POS? The POS bubble mechanics stop your approach, and your warp, on the edge of the bubble.

With this in mind, here's some ways to abuse your idea:

Option 1: Go to belt (ice belt prefered)... fly up next to a mackinaw that is mining your ice.... turn on bubble and watch them float away... laugh when they drift out of Ice mining laser range and get nothing for the cyle.

Option 2: Put orca on a gate in lowsec.... If a ship comes through and tries to power back to gate, turn on bubble to block their approach.

-- edit: Option 2a: Get a bunch of Orca Pilots and block all travel through the gate of your choice... Noone can enter jita by Perimeter anymore, or whatever...

-- edit: Option 2b: Rapecage Jita 4-4 with orcas!!!

Option 3: Put orca on undock.... when a ship undocks, turn on bubble.... collision effects between undock, ship speed, and the station could be al sorts of interesting.... Also, if any capitals try to cyno into a station, I recommend using this to bounce them off.

Option 4: In lowsec, at busy stations that people typically warp to, position orca right outside of station inline with the most common warp in.... put up bubble whenever someone is landing on grid to prevent them from landing within dock range of the station.... then gank them!

These popped into my head when I actually read your mechanics, and I'm sure some more ingenious members of the community can further break your idea...

All my hulks and the macks are heavly tanked and spider tanking T2 med shield drones but its still not enough.

And i cant see how would the shield bubble would be abused if its ment just for the protection of industral ships, it would give time to safely warp the ships to the station.
