A note to UK Virgin Media customers

For the past few months I have had regular problems with game disconnects. If I connected via wireless the client would lose connection with the Eve server (although without crashing) which was incredibly frustrating. I worked around it by installing a wireless access point and connecting my MBP to that via cable. That worked a lot better but I would still get intermittent crashes where the game would just close.

Since a couple of patches ago I noted that there was now a message when the game disconnected. Instead of crashing I got an error message telling me the 'port had been disconnected' (or some such similar) with an option to exit or restart the client. That got me to thinking.

So, over the weekend, I set my Virgin Media wireless broadband router to 'modem mode'. This disables all functionality and turns it into just a pass-through device with a single ethernet port. Into that port i plugged my old Belkin wireless router that I had before Virgin installed the wireless router. I then connected my MBP to it over wireless. So far I have not had a single disconnection. Now it's not conclusive as it has been less than a week, but given that until now I could expect at least one disconnection a day and often more than that it is a marked improvement.

If you are a Virgin Media customer with one of their wireless modems and you are getting regular disconnects then this might be something to consider. Of course not everyone is going to have a spare wireless router kicking around but if you can get hold of one it might be worth a try.

Good luck either way. And here's hoping my problems really are fixed!
