Help picking a new ship for PvP/PvE

Hi guys,

I'm still quite new to the game, and I really haven't gotten involved in too much PvP/PvE beyond running some level 1 agent missions that involved combat and killing rats. I really want to get into PvE and a bit of PvP as well, so I'm looking for a ship that I can fit out to fulfill both those roles relatively well.

I have quite a bit of time to train, since at the moment I'm having a lot of fun with industrial stuff, so I don't intend to buy a PvP/PvE ship right now - I'm more looking for suggestions of what ship to work towards, and what sorts of skills I should train to work towards it.

For an idea of what I'm looking at, I was considering the Brutix. Heard a lot about it being slow and crap, but its power is the sort of thing that I would be interested in.

I've used some guides to get ideas, but would prefer community ideas as well to supplement that.

Thanks everyone.

in the current state of the game, battlecruisers are the go-to for just about everything. Cost effective, lots of fitting options. At low skill points just the number of slots can make them effective in pve.

More important than the ship you'll pick is the people you'll be with. They'll have the biggest influence on what you fly in pvp. Even though i said battlecruisers are very effective, there's still some sort of minimum sp threshold (for pvp) below which you'll learn more and contribute more in a smaller ship. Frigates and destroyers both got buffed up recently.

In short, battlecruiser for missions - yes (although a regular cruiser like a vexor is better for lvl 1's), find some people you can pvp with that will teach you and work with you. Lastly, be prepared to be the new guy in the t1 frig for a few months (its more fun than i make it sound, believe me).

if you do not mind shooting missiles, the caracal->drake->tengu route is pretty solid. the tengu is best or close to best at anything PVE related and the drake is currently the most flown ship in PVP. if missiles are not your thing, you will still want to aim for a battlecruiser first. the race is up to you, they all have their advantages and drawbacks.

edit: it should be noted that amarr ships, especially the cruisers are somewhat underwhelming in PVP. this does not mean that they are total garbage though, so if you feel like armor tanking and pewpew laz0rs, go for it.

I should buy an Ishtar.

For new players, it is pretty essential to stick with your racial ships and weapons systems.

You look like a Gallente player? Then for L1's the best ship to go for would be an Incursus fitted with blasters.

For L2's, a great ship to use is the Vexor with drones and railguns.

For L3's, the Myrm is one of the best missioners out there, and goes great with good drone skills and Minmatar Artillery or rails.

L4's offer a choice in ships; the Dominix is more for people with good drone skills, and the Hyperion is a great blaster ship.

You don't NEED T2 guns, but they are really nice to have IF you have good core skills to max out PG and CPU and cap. Otherwise, meta 4's are fine. if you have good engineering skills, then training up T2 guns after you have trained for the next ship is the way to go (eg, get in an Incursus, then train T2 small hybrids. Get into a Vexor, then train T2 medium hybrids and so on). Doing this will allow you to do many missions to get the feel of them; jumping into L4's as fast as possible usually ends in tears as your ship dies.

Cheers for the replies guys, like the above poster said I think I want to stick with Gallente ships for the moment, even though the Drake does look like a really good option.

I think i'll work towards the Hyperion if that's one of the better/the best L4 for Gallente players out there, I can't say I enjoy drones that much, so I'll give the Dominix a miss. I have plenty of time to train while I do other stuff so there's no real issue with buying it and then not having the proper skills to fly it well.

The Hyperion isn't really ideal for L4 despite how it might look on paper. A rail Megathron is a better choice with its price, tracking bonuses and ease of fitting. With a Rail Mega you can comfortably waddle in and snipe everything with its range and tracking without having to slowboat around too much. Plus you can transfer the fit directly over to a Navy Mega once you get some ISK under your belt and fit moar DPS.

No, it's really not. For new players, you want to pick one race to focus on 'till you can fit and fly a BC decently well, but there's nothing that says it has to be the race that your character is. Any race will do just fine, so long as you focus more on becoming decently proficient in a BC before trying to cross-train everything.

Personally, Caldari (easymode and most common) or Minmatar (most useful down the road, but hardest to train because they use guns, missiles, drones, shields, and armor) are what I tend to recommend as a first race. All four races are just fine, but Cal are the easiest and Min give you the most solid backing for later in the game.

Yeah I almost agree on that.
But from my point of view the best choice is Minmatar because:
- You get Mach which is #1 mission runner
- You get Vargur which is #2 mission runner
- You can choose damage types with Proj weapons
- Most of the ships can tank with the shields which mean you fit more gank then armor tankers
- Minmatar is the best race not only in PvE but also in PvP, so if you train them you kill 2 rabbits with one shot

I flew 3 races (amarr/minmatar/caldari) and now I'm trying out gallente ships which I don't like already because Proj weapons in PvE are much better. Like yeah Kronos can do some damage on a range with rails, but flying Mach is like a sex: it takes a few secs to get on the range with the target and bash it really hard.

TL;DR - Imho best ships for missions are Mach > Vargur > Golem > CNR > Nightmare (if you don't meet Angels or Guristas) > others

Whatever.
