so i'm wondering, i haven't created a new character in years. with the new systems, how close does one come just out of creation to being useful as a scanning alt?

It really depends on what you're scanning for and where you scan.

What: Ships, complexes, or both?

Where: Only highsec, lowsec, or nullsec/wormholes?

Depends on what your minimum requirements are. Really all you need to be a fully useful scanning alt in a basic scan frigate is:

Cloaking I
Astrometrics IV
Astrometrics support skills x3 III
Jury rigging I
Racial frigate IV

Takes about 9 days with no implants & default neural map. You can get pretty good scan performance with just these skills. For a bit better utility, train for Cloaking III and MWD's to get past gatecamps.

If you instead want to go bare bones and skip the racial frigate training, astrometrics IV, and astrometric pinpointing, it drops to about 4 days.

If you want rock-bottom minimum for combat scanning in hostile space, you can further pare back to just astrometrics II, no astrometrics support skills or rigging, and it drops to just over a day (most of which is Electronics IV for cloaking).

If all you want is something to probe out low-strength stuff in high sec, you can literally train astrometrics I in 7 minutes, put a core scan probe launcher on a noobship, and get to it. If you want combat scanning, takes about an hour for Astrometrics II and access to expanded probe launcher.

It's roughly 2 months to get covops 4, cloaking 4, frig 5, astro 5, astro supports at 4 + basic fitting and nav skills to fit out the ship.
anything less than this isnt a covops alt, it's a jita alt.

If you are making a Covert Ops alt you might as well as make it a Covert Cyno alt too.

Continuing on this thread, I'm looking at doing some covert scanning ops (though honestly I'm not all that familiar with them). The ship that looks interesting is the Cheetah (though I can be talked out of it). So, if I want to be able to find hidden belts, mission anomalies, and help corpies find evil reds running around, what optimal skills do you think I should go for. I've got the basics from above, but which would you be in the most hurry to take to +4 or +5? Currently cyno isn't on the radar, but I wouldn't mind getting it trained up just in case.

you want all the astro skills and covops at 4 minimum.
the order to take them to 5, IMO, is then this:

Astrometrics
Covert Ops
Pinpointing
Rangefinding
Acquisition

if you're using a remap to get frigate V first and then remapping again to get the science skills, it takes roughly 36 days with +3 implants to get all astro at IV, cloaking at IV, frigate at V, and covops at IV. torps to IV and the use of the bomb launcher is another week or so. 35 days for a covert cyno. beyond that, use evemon to confirm.

i make spreadsheets for pretty cheap. contact me for more info.
