How the hell do people modify their interface like this? Wasn't it disallowed?

Can someone explain how:

1) Font colors are completely changed, including on the brackets in space.
2) Chat boxes including local have those nice and neat little standing lines with names on them instead of huge pictures wasting space like the default has, making you have to put local across your whole screen to check for reds/neuts.

I thought modifying your UI in any way is not allowed by CCP and can get you banned.

I've seen multiple screenshots and videos on YouTube of people doing that, and other stuff the default settings seem to not have.

Is that a new feature since I played Eve last time or are these people modifying their clients illegally?

Thanks!

Edit: Okay, number 2) was added to the game since I checked last time, so it's legit.

Edit 2: 1) is legit too.

Thanks guys!

Right-click chat window -> "Show Compact member list".

Okay, now that that is out of the way, what about the font colors?

#1 is just a matter of fiddling with the overview XML files. They have a lot more controls and options in them than what's exposed by the in-game UI. I know it's been up for discussion, but I can't recall them ever saying that it broke any rules since it was all done with the functionality the game already offers.

You're telling the UI to do things it can do out of the box; you're not hooking into the game and extracting (or injecting) information that's hidden to you, as with some of the mythical local-alarm and get-too-much-info-from-a-scan “plugins”…

So it's more like how you used to have to manually add certain entities to make them show up (or not show up) on the overview or on scans, such as probes. The code was there all along, and after a while, CCP figured that, hey, maybe they should actually add those entities to the list in the overview settings.

Im not willing to fight for concord can we lose that?

And, isn't sanity really just a one-trick pony anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, oooh, oooh, oooh, the sky is the limit.

That I know, nobody's gotten in trouble for modifying their overview XML file. There have even been services advertised on the forums creating custom XML files for people.

The overview font colors seen in the video were created with a tool that used to exist just to make things easier. Unfortunately it isn't around anymore. There's another tool called Liberty Prime UI Generator that does similar things though. As someone else said, you can mess with the XML files and do it by hand too.

And RvB even have their own custom one that is given to all new recruits.

So yeah, it's legit.
