I struggle all day. What is this Vista "ieframedll" and why does it haunt me so? Why after 3 hours do updates and fixes elude me!? Oh but wait, I have best friends in IT! Yeeeah. Three cheers and all that...

But then nadda on the advice. Derp, DERP, DERP!, that's not what I really do. /insert sad ashamed face.

You tell me you sweet talk servers to do updates and massage desktop vulnerability patches into place. You scrutinize firewall rules sets and lord over web gateway permissions. You force user groups and hog "admin" rights in the name of technology; yet you tell me you don't mess with computers? Your lies and comings and goings, sir!, are most sinister...

I went from Win 98 to Win Xp. We are very conservative pimps.

Kidding aside - I have set some time (err, Austin Powers) aside this weekend to migrate off of Vista. My post is mainly in jest of how the considerable amount of "IT buddy Admin/managers" friends I have that aren't really sure what I need to do. So going to chalk it up to remote desktop confusion, buy a 12-pack and head over to their house for a day of fun and com-puu-tar fixin'.

LOL... yup we are like that. I just google it and it seems to be a vista/ms-explorer PIA. Just upgrade and call it a day (and please for the love of god, backup ur stuff before upgrade).

But you have to understand... most of us work with computers the whole day and when we get out, the last thing we want to deal with it is PC problems. Think about it like this... if you have a friend that works as a janitor cleaning bathrooms the whole day, would you ask him to clean your toilet during the weekend?

so are these people you're talking about friends that you have that work in the backend of a network? or are they friends that work in a call center/did you call a call center?
if it were the former, then they are either thinking about something else, don't want to deal with it right now, or shouldn't be working where they are working. if it were either of the latter, then that would explain it, people who work in call centers rarely know more than how to properly pronounce the terms they are being asked to read out to you.

Plus most offices skipped vista completely. They jumped from XP right into Win7. Employees can't even find the control panel in vista.

Consider this......

What did your service cost you ?
How much did you pay for your solution ?

IT Support - the last vestige of truly charitable organisation.

Now consider this.....

A computer has obtained one of those 'horrible' "best wipe it just in case, there is no real telling whats running now" virii.

Computer needs :
Backup
Virus check of Backups
Rebuild of all software
Configuration
Reinstall of Backed up files.

Honest estimate overall time - @4.5 hours
Estimate with 'downtime' removed - @3 hours full work at the machine

What do you think a IT Tech could charge for this ?
What do you think a Plumber could charge for the same hours ?

Mull over that a while.

Even then, the plumber works in better conditions than Vista provides.

Oh dear lord, did he just mention Windows Vista?
You know as much about computers as my little Sister,
Such a cheapskate, asking on this message board,
Your question is like a broken record.

Burn your PC, BURN IT WITH FIRE,
Then take a step back and admire,
You have rid the world of this horrible OS,
You've reduced it to a smoldering mess

Pat yourself on the back, what a great deed,
You're a hero, reverred, upon thine great steed,
Buy a new PC, on Windows Seven,
and this will gain you entry to heaven

This is why I stuck to Sun SPARC hardware and Solaris OS scripting for as long as I could. So I could face my own PC during the day and not want to turn it right back off again. Lol

In some cases, Win2K to Win7. And Win2K Server to Win2008. Ugh

If you're running Vista this is not the case. It comes pre-screwed.

we google obscure or intricate things. that's the true sign of an IT person is knowing what you should have memorized and what you can afford to leave to a google search.
also, most of the time, you going to google something and try and fix it yourself rather than immediately ordering the IT guys to do it will get you on their good side as long as you don't break it further in the process.
and whenever something goes wrong, remember this phrase, "have you tried turning it off and on again?"

I am an IT guy. Been one for a few decades. My ex wife left me and started screwing every one in site, my son was ripped from my arms never to see again, I got kicked out of my house by the landlords because they wanted more money for the Olympics. Getting made redundant at work because they want cheaper staff from overseas and my pet cat died. But every day every hour every minet I have to say every time. How can I help you.  How can I fix your problems. No one ever cared about my problems. Only time any one talks to me is to fix their problems. You hate us IT guys? That's ok I hate every one. People in my book = problems.
